Washington authorities issue warning as millions of bees escape crashed truck

Over fourteen million bees have broken free from an overturned truck in Whatcom County, Washington. The authorities are currently blocking off the road and working diligently to save the escaping bees.

It’s good luck indeed that the truck overturned in a remote area close to the Canadian border, but local officials are giving this matter their full attention and have decided to launch an emergency response team right away.

The back of the truck was packed full with around 70,000 pounds of beehives, as reported by the Whatcom Sheriff’s Office. In other words, that’s an enormous amount of bees.

The situation led to a complete emergency response, during which specialists on bees were enlisted to help round up the approximately 14 million bees that had fled.

Law enforcement officers, Whatcom County Public Works staff, and a bee specialist are currently managing a truck carrying pollinating bees. We will inform you once the area has been safely secured and Weidkamp can be reopened.

Initially, the police thought there were approximately 250 million bees present, but later on, experts revised this number significantly, bringing it down to just 14 million.
