As a dedicated Warzone player since its inception back in March 2020, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the good old days of Verdansk. The original map was like an old friend that I spent countless hours with, exploring every nook and cranny, mastering its layout, and outsmarting opponents in epic gunfights.
The news that Warzone 1 has been removed from the game forever leaves me with a bittersweet feeling. It’s hard to accept that we can never go back and revisit those memories, especially since I’ve grown attached to the movement and mechanics of the original game. However, I understand the technical reasons behind the decision.
The developers explained it like building a house on top of an old foundation, and then trying to move everything over to a new one. It sounds like a massive undertaking, and I appreciate their honesty in explaining why it’s not possible.
That being said, I’m excited for the return of Verdansk in Spring 2025! Let’s hope that the devs have taken our feedback into account and made some improvements to the map, while still keeping its essence intact. And hey, maybe one day they’ll find a way to bring back some of the original mechanics we miss so much. After all, who knows what the future holds? Just don’t tell me I’ll have to wait for Warzone 4 to play with a grappling hook or jetpack again! đ
It’s not hidden that Warzone has been facing difficulties following Black Ops 6, as cheaters are widespread and players are frustrated with the map options. Although Verdansk is set to return in Spring 2025, many players yearn for the original version. Unfortunately, a developer has shed light on why this isn’t feasible.
During a live broadcast on December 31st, professional gamer and FaZe streamer Kris ‘Swagg’ Lamberson shared insights into why the developers decided not to bring back the initial version of their project.
He stated that they had inquired about the possibility of reintroducing Warzone 1, to which they responded, “unfortunately, we can’t.” Essentially, they described that bringing back Warzone 1 would be challenging because Warzone was like a layered, intricate construction similar to building a bear (using small parts stacked upon each other). This is the way they explained it, not his words.
He explained, “They mentioned they developed Warzone 2, as well as the entire collection of Warzones, using a single engine. That’s the reason.

Q: Why does this version of Warzone appear to have inferior graphics and movement?
A: “This is the path we chose.”Q: Is there a possibility for you to reintroduce Warzone 1?

Why was Warzone 1 removed?
When Warzone debuted in March 2020, it sparked quite a commotion. Later, Cold War and Vanguard were added to the battle royale mix. However, there was a significant issue: it remained linked to Modern Warfare 2019, so players frequently had to revisit the past game, which ran on the same engine.
In November 2022, the sequel of Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 was released, introducing ‘Warzone 2.0’, Call of Duty’s battle royale game powered by a fresh engine. This new version of Warzone stood independently from its earlier version. The initial Warzone version continued for approximately a year before being taken down in September 2023.
Although they may not pine for the Caldera map itself, certain gamers yearn for the gameplay and mechanics of the initial Warzone, causing them to long for a return. Regrettably, as developers clarified to Swagg, such a chance is unattainable.
In Spring 2025, Verdansk will make its return, offering a nostalgic experience as the gameplay, movement, and weaponry remain unchanged. The developers are also working on enhancements to their RICOCHET anti-cheat system, with updates starting from Season 2 in January to address cheating concerns.
