As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for global cinema, I find this partnership between Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and CJ ENM to be a remarkable stride towards cross-cultural storytelling. With a diverse background that spans from the timeless classics of “Casablanca” to contemporary masterpieces like “Parasite,” my appreciation for cinema is deeply rooted in the richness and diversity of narratives.
Warner Bros. Pictures Group has formed a partnership with CJ ENM, the financiers behind Bong Joon Ho’s Academy Award-winning “Parasite” and Celine Song’s critically acclaimed “Past Lives.” This collaboration involves producing, funding, and distributing both English and Korean adaptations of each studio’s respective films.
Under this fresh arrangement, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group assumes control over producing the English-speaking adaptations of CJ ENM’s collection, whereas CJ ENM will be responsible for creating Korean-language versions of Warner Bros. films.
Each studio will independently handle the creation and production of their individual remakes, but there will be collaboration on key creative choices such as the screenwriter, director, producer, cast, and budget. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute all films worldwide, except for CJ ENM, who will manage the release of their remakes in South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Turkey.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s co-chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, praised Miky Lee, CJ vice chairwoman, and her team at CJ ENM for creating a remarkable collection of films throughout their history that have made them a dominant force in Korean cinema. These films have struck a chord with audiences worldwide. They are thrilled about the prospect of collaborating with CJ ENM as they aim to broaden the range of movies provided by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group globally.
Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, head of film business at CJ ENM, commented, “Warner Bros., with its legendary library connecting old and new Hollywood, is a beacon of excellence. Warner Bros. and CJ have each developed extensive film libraries in North America and Asia. This partnership allows us to discover and rejuvenate forgotten treasures, sharing compelling stories with modern viewers. It’s an honor to collaborate with such an iconic brand that consistently innovates, creates, and advocates for storytelling at its finest.
Warner Bros. boasts over 12,500 feature films in its collection, spanning classics like “Casablanca,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Rebel Without a Cause” to modern hits such as “Harry Potter” and “Barbie.” On the other hand, CJ Entertainment, South Korea’s largest media and entertainment company, offers an impressive library of critically acclaimed Korean films, including titles such as “Past Lives,” “Parasite,” and “The Handmaiden.
