As a lifelong Batman fan who has witnessed the Dark Knight’s journey through the years, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and excitement at the news that Warner Bros. is refocusing its efforts on key IP pillars, particularly Batman. The rollercoaster ride we’ve been on lately with Suicide Squad and other releases has left us fans bruised and battered, but it seems like we might finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
During a recent earnings discussion, Warner Bros. acknowledged that their games division fell short in 2024. To improve performance, they will now concentrate on four main intellectual properties (IP) pillars moving forward, with Batman being one of them. The disappointing results from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus resulted in a $300 million loss for Warner Bros. Discovery. In light of this, their CEO David Zaslav stated that Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC (specifically Batman) will be the company’s primary areas of focus.
In simpler terms, the main shift you’ll notice is a decrease in the number of games being created, resulting in a more consistent gaming industry, as pointed out by Zaslav during a financial meeting.

Zaslav stated (via IGN) that we’ve been through tough times in the gaming industry, but it hasn’t been attractive. However, we have four games that have a strong following and we will concentrate mainly on these. Instead of launching numerous games like 10, 12, 15, or 20, we plan to focus less. This strategy could make our gaming business more stable. Our four profitable game series, loved by fans worldwide, are Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC’s Batman. We will channel our development resources into these core franchises, using established studios to enhance our success rate.
This year’s portrayal of Batman in Suicide Squad sparked debate, but contrastingly, the recently released Arkham Shadow VR-exclusive game has been met with positive reception. The financial success of Arkham Shadow is yet to be determined, but it comes as a free addition when you buy the new Meta Quest 3S virtual reality headset.
Moving forward, it appears that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is rumored to be in the works, while NetherRealm Studios is still providing updates for Mortal Kombat 1 through additional guest character DLC. Monolith Productions currently has a Wonder Woman game in production, and following the underwhelming reception of Suicide Squad, Rocksteady is believed to have shifted focus to different projects, with one potential project being an enhanced version of Hogwarts Legacy.
