With its upcoming Warkop DKI venture, Falcon Pictures is taking a significant risk by exploring genre-blending, enlisting renowned Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun to pen an unprecedentedly unorthodox addition to the popular Indonesian comedy series.
The creative team behind the scenes has unveiled that Pisanthanakun, known for his international success in horror films such as “Shutter” and “Pee Mak,” will apply his unique blend of horror and comedy to the fourth movie based on the iconic group of Dono, Kasino, and Indro. (This version maintains the original’s flow while making it easier to understand for a wider audience.)
Following the triumph of Pee Mak, I’ve been eager to revisit the horror-comedy genre for quite some time now,” Pisanthanakun expressed. “This project presents the ideal chance for me to delve back into this fascinating realm where fear and amusement intersect in such a distinctive manner.
Falcon Pictures has consistently achieved strong earnings at the box office with its Warkop DKI films under the “Reborn” label. Established in 2010, this Jakarta-based company has grown into a dominant force within Indonesian filmmaking, creating a diverse range of productions, from the romantic drama “Dilan 1990” to the local version of “Kang Mak”, which is actually a remake of Pisanthanakun’s original work, “Pee Mak”.
For Pisanthanakun, this project serves as a return to horror-comedy genre and a chance to immerse himself in Indonesia’s cinematic culture. He has long admired Indonesian cinema, not just for its daring storytelling but also for the powerful cultural identity it showcases on screen.
Frederica from Falcon Pictures commented, “Warkop DKI forms the basis of Indonesian humor and cultural recognition.” She continued, “Our aim is to maintain the essence of Warkop while reinventing it for modern viewers – not just those in Indonesia but around the world as well.
The classic Warkop DKI trio ruled over Indonesian comedy from the late 70s up until the 90s, their physical humor and social satire deeply resonating within the nation’s pop culture. Falcon’s contemporary reinterpretations have effectively introduced these characters to younger audiences while preserving their rebellious essence.
At present, the movie is still in its initial stages, but it plans to stick to the fundamental interaction among the legendary trio while venturing into uncharted realms of a different genre. In the upcoming months, we can expect updates regarding the cast and director.
Falcon Pictures is broadening its horizons by not only focusing on cinema screenings but also through its streaming service, KlikFilm. This move allows the company to cater to both local and global audiences eager for Indonesian content. The company’s readiness to explore various genres, ranging from big-budget comedies to thought-provoking dramas like “Miracle in Cell No 7”, indicates that the partnership with Pisanthanakun aligns with their broader approach of taking creative risks.
