Initially, Steel Hunters was expected to be Wargaming’s major success, but unfortunately, it didn’t meet the financial targets, and now it’s added to the growing list of multiplayer games that fell short. Regrettably, the servers for this mech shooter game will be closing down within a few months, as it won’t even complete its first year since its launch in April 2025 (which was announced back in December 2024).
Steel Hunters’ short flight before the crash landing
Embarking on a new adventure with a fresh intellectual property is always a roll of the dice, and even if it sounds enticing initially, turning that vision into reality presents a whole new challenge. As an ardent fan, I found myself diving headfirst into Steel Hunters, a free-to-play shooter from the minds behind World of Tanks, when it was unveiled in Early Access at the start of April 2025. However, it didn’t take long for enthusiastic gamers like me to voice concerns, as reviews began filling up with complaints.
The game seemed incomplete, even by Electronic Arts’ standards, with poor matchmaking, lacking a clear plan for future updates, and the usual grievances about their microtransaction system. As a result, the player base decreased rapidly, and now Wargaming has announced that they will be shutting down Steel Hunters’ servers on October 8th.
As the sun sets, the developers have planned a grand finale for the players. They intend to provide an opportunity for players to create their own games, unlock every available Hunter (even those not yet revealed), and organize a final farewell competition as a parting gift.
As a passionate fan, I must admit that Steel Hunters wasn’t an unmitigated catastrophe. Though there were some criticisms, many gamers saw promise in this project. Interestingly, much of the negative feedback seemed to be directed more towards the publisher’s business strategies rather than the game itself. It may not become 2025’s most infamous flop like last year’s Concord, but it does underscore the fact that live-service games aren’t always the golden ticket for game development.
