As an avid enthusiast, I must say that Wargaming took a daring step away from the established World of Tanks formula. It’s been some time since they delivered a blockbuster like World of Warships, but their latest offering, Steel Hunters, seems to be missing the mark with us fans.
A promising concept that’s falling short
Steel Hunters revolutionizes vehicular combat by introducing mechs in a PvPvE battle royale setting. Unlike traditional battles, players engage not only with other competitors but also AI opponents while searching for superior equipment, all while the play zone gradually shrinks. Contrasting Wargaming’s typical historical games, Steel Hunters boasts mechs equipped with advanced abilities and weaponry from the future. The game prioritizes real-time upgrading over extensive progression and while teamwork is possible, the experience is primarily designed for solo survival.
On April 2, 2025, Steel Hunters entered Early Access following a closed beta, yet managed to reach a peak of only 4,479 simultaneous players. A week later, the player count on Steam has dropped significantly to over 2,000. Considering Wargaming also offers its own launcher, it’s likely that the actual number of players is even lower.
Currently, I’ve jumped into this game on Steam, but it seems like many others have had a rough start as well. Initially, the reviews were dismal, dipping down to around 30-40%, and they’re still not great at 56%. Despite its solid core idea, there are some significant drawbacks. For starters, the absence of voice chat in a modern title is a major letdown. Additionally, the gameplay becomes repetitive pretty quickly, and the main objectives lack variety. To make matters worse, the limited content makes it feel less appealing. The general consensus among players is that the game feels unfinished and a bit outdated.
Steel Hunter appears as if it emerged from 2018 but miraculously landed in 2025. Regrettably, it offers little that is fresh or innovative.

I really appreciate the aesthetics and hefty sensation of these robots, yet it’s clear they’re just a battle royale game disguised as an extract-and-shoot title in the end.

The automatic graphics settings might not be functioning correctly, as it appears to have overlooked the appropriate screen resolution and graphics card.

It seems Steel Hunters is not likely to be Wargaming’s next major success, but should it miraculously gain traction, there’s undoubtedly a great deal of effort that will need to be invested.
