Due to recent layoffs affecting approximately 4% of Microsoft’s total workforce (around 9000 employees), Warcraft Rumble is now entering a maintenance phase where essential operations are preserved.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing some exciting news from Blizzard’s official blog post. The brilliant team behind Warcraft Rumble has shared their plans to keep the game thriving with regular updates focusing on in-game events, bug fixes, but no new content additions. This approach mirrors their current strategy with games like StarCraft II and Heroes of the Storm, as explained by Blizzard’s President Johanna Faires in an internal email about recent changes, which was later reported by Aftermath.
In 2023, a mobile tower defense game called Warcraft Rumble, modeled after Blizzard’s renowned Warcraft series, was finally launched following nine years of development. However, as per recent updates, the game has faced challenges in gaining traction and, despite input from players and adjustments made by the developers, it hasn’t managed to establish a trajectory towards long-term success.
In the recent changes at Blizzard, Aftermath states that up to 100 employees may be affected. Although some are losing their jobs, others are being reassigned to different projects within Blizzard. However, several teams within the company are also experiencing reductions as part of this restructuring process.
The modifications to Warcraft Rumble seem to mirror the ongoing job cuts across various Microsoft departments, particularly those associated with Xbox.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve just learned some heartbreaking news. Reports suggest that the MMO from Zenimax Online Studios, creators of Elder Scrolls Online, has sadly been scrapped. The Initiative, a studio founded by Xbox to reboot Perfect Dark, is shutting down, and Everwild, an ambitious project from Sea of Thieves’ developers Rare, has also been cancelled. This wave of cuts is truly disheartening.
The development processes for both projects were lengthy and fraught with difficulties, leading to Perfect Dark needing additional support from Crystal Dynamics. Since the announcement of Everwild in 2019, there has been minimal news about it. Over time, there have been whispers about the game’s production and staff departures, hinting at a potential reboot. However, these speculations were eventually confirmed with the cancellation of the project.
As a gamer, I’m keeping a close eye on the situation unfolding within the Xbox family, as details about recent layoffs are gradually emerging from the affected teams. The full extent of this impact is yet to be fully understood.
