It’s been a decade since the Warcraft movie was released, and even though it wasn’t a success with critics or at the box office, a sequel still makes sense. World of Warcraft is incredibly well-known – even people who don’t play video games have likely heard of it.
The world of World of Warcraft includes both real-time strategy and massively multiplayer online role-playing games, starting in 1994. A live-action movie, Warcraft, was released in 2016 after a long development process. While not perfect, the film is still worth watching and could benefit from a follow-up.
What Is Warcraft About?
The movie Warcraft isn’t based on a specific game from the Warcraft series, but it’s primarily set on Azeroth – the world where most of the games happen. The story takes place before the events of World of Warcraft, at a time when the Horde and the Alliance hadn’t yet clashed.
The movie tells the story of Anduin Lothar, a human leader played by Travis Fimmel, and Durotan, an orc chieftain played by Toby Kebbell. They find themselves on opposite sides of a war that could destroy everything. To defeat a greater threat manipulating the conflict, humans and a group of orcs who want peace must join forces.
Why Reviews For Warcraft Were So Bad
The Warcraft movie didn’t achieve the same popularity as the video games. It was largely considered a failure, scoring only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite earning $430 million worldwide, it ultimately lost money due to its very high production and marketing costs (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Okay, so look, Warcraft had issues. The dialogue wasn’t always great, and some of the acting felt… flat. But honestly, the biggest problem was the story. It was way too complicated, like they tried to cram three different movies into one. It felt rushed and just really confusing, and I walked away feeling lost instead of invested.
Warcraft Deserves Another Adaptation
Even though the first Warcraft movie didn’t do well with critics or at the box office, another one should still be made. The core story of good versus evil is straightforward and easily adaptable from the games, especially considering the many self-contained storylines available in the game’s expansions.
The world of Warcraft has so many stories to tell, and one unsuccessful adaptation shouldn’t define the entire franchise. We’re currently seeing a lot of good video game adaptations, and enough time has passed since the first Warcraft movie for audiences to be open to another attempt, whether it’s a sequel or a fresh start.
