As a longtime Warcraft enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the treacherous waters of Azeroth and beyond, the prospect of a remastered version of Warcraft 2 sends shivers of excitement down my spine. The original game was a revolutionary step forward for real-time strategy games, and I can still remember the thrill of commanding armies on land, sea, and air in the face of the Burning Legion’s relentless onslaught.
It appears that Warcraft 2: Remastered might be on its way, since an “internal alpha” with a logo and artworks has been found within Blizzard’s server system recently.
According to information from Wowhead, the leak originates from Blizzard’s own servers for delivering content. One of Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness’ groundbreaking features in 1995 was its emphasis on battles at sea and in the air, and the leaked early version contains artwork depicting a human warship navigating through turbulent waters.
Blizzard is preparing for the 30th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise, and on November 13, they will host a live stream to commemorate the occasion. The developer has hinted that there will be content appealing to all fans, including those who enjoyed the classic Warcraft strategy games. Since there won’t be a BlizzCon this year, fans anticipate major announcements usually saved for Blizzard’s annual fan gathering to be revealed during the 30th anniversary livestream instead.
It appears that Warcraft 2: Remastered might be unveiled during the live stream, although Blizzard has yet to make an official announcement about the game. Previously, they have given the remaster treatment to classic titles like StarCraft in 2017 and Diablo 2 in 2021, which was released as Diablo 2: Resurrected.
2020’s Warcraft 3: Reforged is one example where Blizzard revamped an iconic real-time strategy game from the past. However, this remaster didn’t meet the expectations of many fans, who felt it fell short compared to the original Warcraft 3. The response to Warcraft 3: Reforged was so negative that Blizzard provided refunds without asking questions, and later reports suggested the game suffered from budget constraints and mismanagement.
It appears that there are signs suggesting Blizzard might be planning a second chance for Warcraft 3: Reforged. Last year, a Blizzard survey about a possible relaunch of Reforged caught people’s attention. Recently, the game servers briefly displayed an unannounced version 2.0 build, only to be taken down later. However, no official statement has been made yet.
Rather than passively anticipating an official Blizzard remaster, enthusiasts have proactively revamped Warcraft 2 for contemporary use. One fan-led initiative, known as Warcraft: Chronicles of War, recreates Warcraft 2 utilizing the engine from Warcraft 3: Reforged. At present, the Horde campaign is accessible for free to those who already possess Reforged.
During the livestream commemorating its 30th anniversary, Blizzard has provided several methods for fans to honor the franchise across different games. For instance, Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 will feature Warcraft-themed costumes. Moreover, in World of Warcraft: The War Within, the recent update predominantly focuses on the game’s 20th anniversary. This allows players to engage with “Timewalking” adaptations of original WoW dungeons and acquire updated variations of some of the game’s most memorable armor sets.
