Walton Goggins in Talks to Play M. Bison in Street Fighter Movie

Further updates are circulating regarding Legendary’s upcoming “Street Fighter” film. It appears that Walton Goggins, known for his role in “Justified,” is being considered as a potential addition to the diverse cast preparing to bring the Capcom video game to life on the big screen once again.

In April 2023, Legendary secured exclusive rights for both film and television adaptations of the IP. Shortly after, Danny and Michael Philippou were set to direct, but later got replaced by Kitao Sakurai (known for “Bad Trip”). As for who will produce or write, that information is currently unknown. Notably, Legendary and Capcom, the creators of the popular video game series, will collaborate on both production and development of the film.

The representatives from the studio haven’t shared any insights yet regarding past speculations about casting, including those mentioned by Deadline involving Andrew Koji (from Bullet Train), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Noah Centineo (Black Adam), and Roman Reigns of WWE (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. At this point, they haven’t made any official statements about it.)

According to Jeff Sneider, who writes for The Insider, there’s a rumor circulating that Goggins could take on the roles of M. Bison, the formidable final boss and leader of Shadowloo, in an upcoming film. On his podcast, The Hot-Mic, Sneider expressed surprise at this rumor since Goggins is currently experiencing a surge in popularity. He also mentioned that while he anticipated Goggins might secure a more prestigious role, it’s also possible that he’s due for a substantial movie paycheck with this project.

Alongside the captivating speculation that Goggins might be part of the venture, they also delved into two other potential actors for the roles. One is Eric André, known for his TV show “The Eric Andre Show” and having worked with director Kitao Sakurai on the 2021 film “Bad Trip,” a unique blend of scripted road trip and buddy comedy with hidden camera pranks. The other is Orville Peck, a musician who often wears a mask in public, keeping his face concealed from view.

According to Sneider, he suspects that André might take on the role of the ring announcer, while Peck could portray Vega. However, he emphasizes that this is merely his speculation as there’s no confirmed writer for the project yet. If Orville Peck, a South African artist, were to be cast as the Spanish cage-fighter, Vega, it would go against the current trend of casting based on race in recent productions.

The general public’s responses to the news have centered around Goggins, exhibiting a blend of curiosity, enthusiasm, and disappointment. Although he appears slender, Goggins has a history of portraying intimidating characters.

In the captivating series “Justified,” I admired Boyd Crowder’s character, a complex man who was perhaps a little unbalanced but undeniably Quixotic. On the other hand, in “Fallout,” he transformed into the enigmatic bounty hunter, The Ghoul. However, some fans argue that physically, his towering muscular build might be more convincingly portrayed by actors like Alan Ritchson, who brought Reacher to life, or John Cena, known for his roles in “Fred: The Movie” and “Peacemaker.

1994’s Street Fighter featured Raul Julia as Bison, whose iconic acting and scene-stealing performances are still fondly remembered by ’90s kids. Despite his impressive height of 6’2″, he towered over Jean Claude Van Damme’s Colonel Guile, who stood at around 5’10”. However, after years of battling stomach cancer, Raul Julia’s physical appearance bore little resemblance to his video game character counterpart. Similarly, the casting of Goggins might focus more on charisma rather than a close match in physicality.

Could this film, directed by a humor specialist and featuring an ensemble of wrestlers, comics, action heroes, and character players, potentially resemble the wild, chaotic madness of its 1994 precursor in a modern retelling?
