Walter Salles, Johnnie To, Lav Diaz and More Set for Doha Film Institute Qumra Masters Lineup

The Doha Film Institute has invited Walter Salles (nominated for an Oscar in “I’m Still Here”), renowned directors Johnnie To from Hong Kong, Law Diaz known as a prominent auteur from the Philippines, skilled cinematographer Darius Khondji, and experienced Mexican costume designer Anna Terrazas to lead discussions on stage and provide mentorship at its upcoming Qumra Arab film industry program.

The event, now celebrating its 11th edition, will run April 4-9 in the Qatari capital of Doha.

Qumra, or “camera” in Arabic, combines a creative workshop, a co-production market, and festival aspects. It was initiated by the Doha Film Institute (DFI) as a platform to nurture initial and subsequent works primarily by Arab directors, and to forge connections between the Arab and global film industries through carefully designed networking events.

The Dubai Film Institute (DFI) plays a significant role in propelling the independent Arab film industry and has been offering financial support for Arab television series over the past few years. In 2025, Qumra will showcase an array of excellent Arab films at different stages, along with some TV productions.

Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, DFI CEO, expressed great pleasure in extending a warm welcome to some globally acclaimed artists. These esteemed individuals will impart their wisdom and expertise to our Qumra attendees, igniting a spark that encourages the next generation to perfect their artistry. By doing so, they’ll foster the creation of daring, lasting tales that will significantly influence the evolution of cinema.

Elia Suleiman, DFI’s artistic advisor, remarked: “Cinema encompasses more than just the narratives we create; it includes the significant pauses – the areas filled with subtle meaning. At Qumra, these moments of quietude reverberate powerfully, as they amplify the voices of emerging talent and are guided by the knowledge of the Qumra Masters. It is a space of change, where the future of film isn’t prescribed, but unveiled.
