Waitress sparks backlash after messaging food reviewer over size of tip

The restaurant server is facing backlash online after locating a diner on Instagram to ask about the amount of their tip.

Discussing tips left after meals is a contentious topic on the internet. Unlike in the U.S., tipping is less customary in Europe. However, while a meal might be pricey, the tip usually signifies the level of service provided.

In many food critic’s videos, a particular aspect is often highlighted. After dining at Etra in East Hollywood, Asia (also known as thefoodiebitch) shared an Instagram reel detailing her visit, commending the excellent service despite finding the food slightly pricey.

The Instagram user expressed that staff are essential, praising them for their friendly demeanor and extensive knowledge of the menu. In response, one server inquired as to why a larger tip wasn’t given for the service provided.

Hello Asia, out of respect, I’d like to ask about the service aspect that didn’t meet your expectations. Although you complimented our team, your tip was quite low,” they expressed.

Asia explained, saying she had given a 15% gratuity. “Greetings! Respectfully speaking, it’s challenging for me to add an additional 20-30% tip on top of the expensive food. I feel I gave 15%, but next time I might have to choose between a glass of wine or a larger tip!

The waiter appreciated her response, mentioning that dining out costs are becoming increasingly expensive, but didn’t agree with the assertion that the bill was 15%. “What we actually take home is less than 15%, and even if it were, it would still be a significant amount given the praised service both here and at other establishments,” they explained to another commenter.

The interaction attracted more participants. “Wow, the expectation for tips in your comments has instantly moved this from my list of things to try right away,” one said. “It’s quite peculiar to be so critical towards small businesses and yet be stingy with tips,” another pointed out.

‘I work in food service, and I must admit, that’s one of the most disrespectful comments I’ve ever encountered,’ another pointed out.”

“Third statement: ‘Asking why you didn’t tip more is downright crazy,’ remarked another.

The food reviewer said that she had been “bullied into 20% tip minimum” moving forward.
