In an upcoming biopic titled “The Smashing Machine“, Dwayne Johnson transforms beyond recognition into UFC fighter Mark Kerr, written and directed by Benny Safdie, one of the siblings behind “Uncut Gems“. The trailer opens with a battered Kerr, saying “You’re probably looking at my eyes,” to an older woman who appears as puzzled as we are by Johnson’s new appearance. Alongside his girlfriend, Emily Blunt’s character Dawn Staples, Kerr struggles against the ban on UFC fighting in more than half of U.S. states, and also seeks opportunities to fight in Japan. He simultaneously battles his addiction to painkillers, a battle that seems to be losing ground – as evidenced by a tearful photo taken by Staples during their transition phase. “The Smashing Machine” hits theaters on October 3. Brace yourself for the punch.
