Gawr Gura bid farewell to her previous VTuber persona upon departing from the Hololive label, which meant letting go of the past and seeking a fresh fanbase. Yet, her debut livestream with the new character surpassed all expectations.
The VTuber who used to be known as Gawr Gura has now taken on a new persona – a cat-like shark character named Saba. She’s embarking on a fresh journey with a revamped model and streaming identity, aiming to establish herself independently from the realm of VTuber agencies.
To put it simply, based on her initial viewer numbers, she’s off to an excellent beginning. Reaching a peak of 198,000 viewers, she’s competing with some of the highest viewership debuts ever recorded among VTubers.
Saba instantly becomes one of the biggest VTubers
In the last few years, there’s been a lot of public disagreements between virtual YouTuber (VTuber) individuals and their production companies, notably including well-known groups such as Hololive and Nijisanji. These entities have been surrounded by significant controversy.
Gawr Gura openly stated the causes behind her departure from Hololive, which mainly involved differences in opinion with the management. Approximately two months later, on April 29, 2025, she decided to leave and it was around this time that she reemerged as Saba.

Furthermore, although some fans long for Gawr Gura’s previous avatar and the vast possibilities offered by Hololive, such as appearing on a Dodger’s game screen, opting to go independent grants her significantly more creative control over her content.
