Actors Lynn Chen, Vivica A. Fox, and comedian Dwayne Perkins have joined Romell Foster-Owens for his sophomore film titled “Love Bait.” This announcement comes from producer Quentin Lee of Margin Films, who is also presenting “Love Bait” and the romantic comedy TV series “Morning, Paris!” at the Series Mania Forum happening in Lille, France from March 24-27.
In today’s contentious political climate, where efforts to undermine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are evident under Trump, I am thrilled beyond words to be working on a comedy that showcases a rich tapestry of cultures. It’s like a joyous gathering at a family reunion collaborating with Lynn Chen, Koji Steven Sakai, Vivica A. Fox, Dwayne Perkins, and Romell Foster-Owens – individuals whose talent I have long admired and had the pleasure of working alongside.” – Lee.
In “Love Bait,” we follow Chen, an ambitious young Asian American woman, who has been meticulously prepared by her conservative parents for a lucrative corporate career. Desperate to gain their approval of her boyfriend, she concocts a daring scheme: hiring a professional “bad boy” (Perkins) to make her true love appear as the perfect match. However, things take an unexpected turn when Chen finds herself inexplicably attracted to the charismatic fake suitor, resulting in a delightfully tangled romantic triangle. This tale is filled with humor and twists!
Romell Foster-Owens’ longtime partner, Fox (who is also the executive producer), will take on the role of Perkin’s unprofessional love interest’s mother, Mrs. Jones.
In 1991, Foster-Owens became the initial African American female director of a comedy feature film titled “The Three Muskatels,” with Richard Pryor as the lead actor.
Love Bait” is a screenplay co-written by Perkins and Sakai, set to be produced by Foster-Owens (known for “First Love,” “Conflict of Interest”) and Sakai (behind “The Commando,” “The People I’ve Slept With”), in collaboration with Lee. Lee is the creator of the award-winning stand-up comedy documentary series, “Comedy Invasion,” which won the Best Comedy Special award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.
Previously, Perkins has acted alongside Chen in the comedy-thriller “Dying to Kill,” penned by Sakai (released in 2016), as well as the narrative podcast “Elucidity” (from Voyage Media) written by Sakai and released in 2024.
Additionally, Chen featured alongside other actors in the popular independent romantic comedy with sexual themes titled “The People I’ve Been Intimate With,” which was penned and directed by Lee, based on a screenplay by Sakai, and released in 2009.
Currently, Nadia Hatta, who was nominated for a Leo Award in 2024 and is known for her role in Netflix’s “Away,” will appear in the upcoming half-hour romantic comedy series titled “Morning, Paris!”. This series is being created and overseen by Lee. Remarkably, this project has been chosen for the Canada-France Series Lab 2025, an exclusive collaboration between Series Mania, Telefilm Canada, and CNC (the French National Centre of Cinema).
“Love Bait” is set to begin production this Fall.
