As a seasoned crypto investor and follower of the blockchain industry, I find myself constantly impressed by the unwavering support and commitment shown by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin towards the community. His recent donation of 50 ETH to the legal defense fund for Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev, a sum worth approximately $170,000 at writing time, is yet another testament to his strong convictions in upholding the principles of decentralization and freedom.

Having been involved in crypto since its early days, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that developers and projects face when navigating the complex legal landscape of this rapidly evolving space. Buterin’s actions, such as his support for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2022 and multiple contributions to the Free Pertsev and Storm Juicebox, demonstrate a clear understanding of these challenges and a willingness to stand by those who are fighting for their cause.

It is not easy to be a pioneer in this industry, especially when facing mounting legal challenges like the Tornado Cash developers. Buterin’s donation represents about 25% of the funds available through JusticeDAO, a community-driven initiative, which shows the power of collective action and support within our decentralized ecosystem.

In my opinion, Buterin’s actions serve as an inspiring example for all crypto enthusiasts and investors. It reminds us that, despite the challenges we may face, there is strength in unity and a shared commitment to the ideals that drive this industry forward.

Joke: I guess when they say “Be like water,” Vitalik Buterin doesn’t just mean in coding… he means in his wallet too!

Vitalik Buterin, a key figure in the creation of Ethereum, has donated to the defense fund for the developers of Tornado Cash, namely Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev.

At the time of writing, Vitalik Buterin donated around 50 Ether (ETH), which was equivalent to about $170,000, to help the developers cope with escalating legal hurdles they were facing.

The Donation

On December 31st, news was disseminated via a post on X by the Juicebox project, where Free Pertsev and Roman Storm announced something. Later, Roman Storm made a separate post expressing thanks for the funds received, stating it as an illustration of Buterin’s guidance and backing.

I’d like to express heartfelt appreciation to Vitalik Buterin for his kind contribution towards my legal defense. His consistent backing and setting an exemplary standard of generosity leave a profound impact on everyone. I am grateful for your solidarity in these tough circumstances,” the message reads.

Additionally, he disclosed that this latest contribution equates to approximately one quarter of the $650,000 currently accessible via JusticeDAO, an initiative driven by the community aimed at funding their ongoing legal disputes.

Previously, Buterin has also been part of legal defense initiatives for contentious situations. In the year 2022, he donated 10 Ether (valued at approximately $30,980) to the AssangeDAO fund, which was established to aid Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, with his legal expenses.

In October, I extended a generous donation of approximately 100 Ether (ETH), equivalent to roughly $240,000, to Free Pertsev and Storm Juicebox. This contribution came on top of another donation I made back in May, amounting to 30 ETH or around $113,000, all aimed at the same noble cause.

Tornado Cash Developers Face Ongoing Legal Challenges

The cryptocurrency tumbling service, Tornado Cash, has been making headlines due to unfavorable circumstances, particularly because of allegations from various government entities claiming it was misused by unscrupulous individuals for nefarious purposes such as money laundering.

Last August, the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) placed restrictions on a specific platform, accusing it of being involved in laundering over $7 billion worth of cryptocurrency since 2019, with North Korean hackers reportedly being behind these activities.

The judicial proceedings brought increased examination to the service, resulting in the arrest of co-founder Alexey Pertsev by Dutch authorities in 2022. He was subsequently convicted of money laundering charges in May 2024 and sentenced to more than five years in prison. Currently, Pertsev is pursuing an appeal of the verdict.

In the U.S., Storm and his co-developer, Roman Semenov, are under investigation for allegedly engaging in money laundering activities, breaching sanctions, and committing fraud, related to their work on a cryptocurrency tumbler.

storm’s legal proceedings have been moved to April 14, 2025, following a delay from the initial date in December 2024, and he was granted bail until then. In the meantime, Semenov continues to evade capture.
