As a fan of “Virgin River,” I must say that this season was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! From the shocking cliffhangers to the emotional reunions, it kept me on the edge of my seat. The interview with Rob Thomas, the show’s creator, gives us a glimpse into the mind behind the drama and suspense we’ve come to love.
WARNING: This post contains spoilers from Season 6 of “Virgin River,” now streaming on Netflix.
The wedding season is upon us in Virgin River, as evidenced by the 10 episodes that started streaming on Dec. 19. These episodes primarily revolved around Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) wedding preparations, but they didn’t forget to maintain the essence of “Virgin River”. This includes complex romantic entanglements expanding beyond triangles to squares, unexpected proposals, and an unforeseen baby arrival.
Here, Patrick Sean Smith elaborates on all the surprises, suspenseful moments, and hints at future events for Season 7.
Before delving into all the suspenseful moments, I must mention that this season seemed significantly warmer compared to previous ones. Was there perhaps a discussion beforehand about making it more passionate?
In my opinion, it seemed authentic throughout the love-filled build-up to the wedding, as this is my second season on the show and I was still getting a grasp of all its complexities. From character relationships, romance, crime, medical issues, and now fire, to the multi-generational themes, there’s always a lot happening. Consequently, we delved a bit deeper into the romantic connections of some of our characters. I take great pride in all these developments, but the one that stands out most is the sewing circle openly discussing their personal lives, especially their sexual relationships. It felt genuine, it felt natural, and it stayed true to the characters.
Yes, indeed. This season featured numerous romantic moments, among them a heartfelt scene at the pool table between Brady and Brie. By any chance, do you employ an intimacy advisor in your production process?
In every case, we extend the opportunity. On one occasion, Ben and Zibby chose to pass, after giving it careful thought and deliberation. We collaborate with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), and I had a one-on-one session with them to broaden my understanding, as we wanted the portrayal to be physical, subtly sensual, and in certain aspects, intense. This aspect made me apprehensive, regarding its boundaries. I was reminded that sexual assault and violence are not driven by aggression but rather power dominance. I believe we were quite considerate. The thorough research conducted by both Ben and Zibby added a dimension of awareness to the situation, almost as if they were steering it themselves.
As we discuss Brady and Brie, let’s explore the intriguing love quadrangle. It seems that both Brady and Mike (Marco Grazzini) have expressed their feelings towards Brie. The question is, does Brie find herself with Mike due to his kind-heartedness or because she believes he is her soulmate?
It appears to me that she’s likely grappling with a situation that logically should be running smoothly, but isn’t. The mystery for her seems to revolve around why this particular issue persists. Considering her past as a survivor of partner assault and the subsequent self-doubt it may have instilled, I believe her difficulty lies in trusting herself to make the right decisions. In Mike, she sees an apparent solution, one that she’s leaning towards, but the challenge comes from trying to force this choice and navigate the resulting struggle.
In the end, Lark (Elise Gatien) revealed her genuine nature, but for a moment, it appeared as if she might genuinely be developing feelings for Brady. Could that entire affection have been a deceitful act?
In Season 7, we’ll delve into all the details, but personally, I believe she developed feelings for him. It seems to me that she clearly understood she would always be second to Brie, which is somewhat paradoxical. And Brady wasn’t at his finest when he deceived her upon being questioned about it. He kept secrets, so I wanted to ensure she felt vindicated because there’s a significant difference between cold-blooded deceit and deceit driven by emotional retribution, which seemed more intriguing.
From what I’ve learned, Zibby mentioned there were actually two alternative conclusions to Brie’s storyline. Apart from the scene where Mike proposed, Brie admitted she had slept with Brady, and he responded “I know,” what was the other scenario?
Initially, when we filmed this, we toyed with the idea of him uttering “I know.” It struck me as unique and fresh, something I hadn’t encountered before. However, I had a concern that it might come across as redundant. After filming, we screened it for the writing team, who were unaware we had added this line on set. When we reached that scene and he delivered the line, everyone reacted with excitement. I thought, “I believe we should keep that line.
Without a doubt, I was taken aback! So, it’s clear that the season finale left us hanging with Mel waking up post-wedding and potentially having a baby. Could you possibly shed some light on how Mel might be feeling about this when we resume in Season 7?
Absolutely, what intrigued me was discovering the next day, after achieving something I’d desired for such a long time, and finding another item left at my feet unexpectedly. Is it easy to accept immediately? The situation is complex because Marley (Rachel Drance) is her patient. She’s unsure of her own motivations, so there’s much to consider in this unexpected development.
Will there be a time jump in Season 7?
We’ll pick up pretty much right where we left off — it’s about an hour later.
Understood! One of the other major mysteries left unanswered is what became of Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley). She didn’t appear frequently in this season, possibly because of scheduling conflicts and her more prominent role on “Sullivan’s Crossing.” Will we see her again next season?
That’s the plan. Part of a shift creatively was trying to pull back on the crime stories that had been in the series before that started to overshadow [other things]and I think for some viewers, started to lean more dark. So in Season 6, it was our opportunity to make the crime element more personal, with Charmaine and Calvin’s relationship. So it was a little bit of an effect of that. But I love Lauren so much. She’s so incredibly talented. I know people have been divided about Charmaine, but I feel like she’s been a great villain. It was our intent to redeem her a little bit in Season 5, to understand why she did some of the things that she did. I feel like we still have a character that, even while she’s not in play in every episode, still resonates with the audience.
For a moment, Mark Ghanimé’s character, Cameron, reappeared and stayed with Muriel, played by Teryl Rothery. However, he eventually departed for San Diego once more. Can we expect his return in the upcoming season?
Regrettably, Cameron won’t return as a main cast member for the upcoming season. I adore Mark, and I dearly missed Cameron. I believe he will forever remain an integral part of our “Virgin River” universe and kin. Therefore, should the narrative allow it, I would eagerly welcome his return.
Did you present the main characters from the prequel during this television series? I’m curious about your thoughts on how many more seasons “Virgin River” might run. Achieving seven seasons would be quite impressive.
As far as the audience continues to attend and there remains interest in it, I believe this series captures the essence of human experiences across generations. It would be a delight to carry on exploring these characters’ lives and aging alongside them. The program seems capable of such an enduring journey.
