A restaurant owner in China recently became popular online after jokingly telling social media influencers that positive reviews could actually cause problems for his business.
Restaurants generally succeed or fail based on what people say about them in reviews. Earning a Michelin star is the greatest achievement for a chef, and it quickly turns their restaurant into a popular spot for food lovers.
These days, social media is significantly impacting the restaurant industry. Creators like Keith Lee and SamsPOV are using platforms like TikTok and Instagram to highlight small restaurants, bringing them renewed attention and business.
Surprisingly, a restaurant owner in China is frustrated by all the good reviews his business is receiving. He says the restaurant’s popularity is actually creating more problems than it’s solving.
Chinese restaurant owner doesn’t want good reviews
Chef Lao Mo’s chicken pot restaurant in Foshan is incredibly popular in China, recently becoming a viral sensation. People are waiting for hours just to get a taste!
He recently hosted a group of social media influencers and surprisingly asked them not to write overly positive reviews. He explained that if they raved about the food, things would become difficult for him, and he specifically requested they avoid excessive praise.
“Don’t make me too popular, I can’t handle the rush,” Mo also said, according to The South.
According to the South China Morning Post, the chef has even asked customers to stay away, posting warnings about the potential effects of his food, which includes ingredients from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It’s causing quite a stir, as many suspect the warnings are related to unusual or strong reactions to the herbs.
The restaurant owner is rumored to have posted fake negative reviews about his own business, possibly to discourage customers. Surprisingly, this hasn’t stopped new people from visiting and the restaurant remains busy.
This isn’t the only unique restaurant news from China right now. One McDonald’s location there is experimenting with robots to welcome guests and handle orders.
Plus, one restaurant is now using artificial intelligence to recommend menu items to customers. It does this by analyzing scans of their faces and tongues.
Interestingly, some couples are now choosing food delivery as a first date, seeing it as a great way to quickly see how well they work together under pressure.
