Viral Brazilian Popeye dead at 55 after health complications

Arlindo de Souza, who gained internet fame for resembling Popeye due to injecting his arms with mineral oil and alcohol, has passed away at the age of 55.

A Brazilian bodybuilder became well-known in the early 2000s for his unusual goal: to resemble the cartoon character Popeye. He gained international attention, appearing on television shows both in Brazil and around the world, and was famous for his impressively large biceps, which measured 73 centimeters.

He also gained popularity online, as a new audience discovered his TV work and distinctive style from the early 2000s.

On January 13th, his family shared the news of his passing, which occurred in the hospital after he experienced complications from kidney failure.

De Souza was hospitalized in December, and his nephew, Denis Gomes de Luna, told Globo in Brazil that his kidneys had stopped working before Christmas.

Arlindo was hospitalized because of kidney failure. His nephew explained that one kidney failed initially, and the other stopped working around Christmas time.

Fluid began to build up in his lungs, and he had a heart attack before doctors could even start dialysis. While the official death certificate isn’t available yet, it seems he died from multiple organ failure.

I just heard from De Luna that Arlindo was buried yesterday, on January 14th. It’s so sad, and apparently, not everyone in his family has been told yet. It’s awful they’re still dealing with that on top of everything else.

This also includes the grandmother he was living with. De Luna explained, “She adored him, and because she’s elderly and unable to leave her bed, she hasn’t been told he passed away.”

Arlindo repeatedly warned people against using mineral oil to build muscle, stating in 2014, “I don’t recommend anyone use this oil.”

I’ve quit using it, and other substances too, but the urge to start again is always present. Thankfully, I’ve been able to stay in control up until now.
