Viola Davis, renowned as one of her generation’s top dramatic actors and a EGOT winner, has left some people puzzled about “G20.” In an unexpected twist, she stars in a Prime Video movie that is more reminiscent of “White House Down,” featuring action-packed scenes. Here, Davis portrays a U.S. president who faces an attack during the G20 summit. However, unlike the Secret Service, this president can handle action situations and saves herself.
In an interview with The Times of London, Davis justified her decision to act in a high-action film rather than focusing solely on award-winning roles. She explained, “Not every movie needs to be Oscar-worthy. I was drawn to a project that families could enjoy watching together, something entertaining and popular.”
During an interview with The Times of London, Davis clarified why she chose to star in an action film despite her accolades. She stated plainly, “I don’t feel every movie needs to be Academy Award material. I was drawn to a project that families could watch together, something fun and widely appealing.
Davis made history by becoming the first Black woman to receive an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which she achieved through her exceptional portrayal on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.” She boasts four Oscar nominations and one win (for Best Supporting Actress in “Fences”). In addition, Davis has two Tony Awards and six Screen Actors Guild awards to her name, along with numerous other award wins.
Davis mentioned that even though one may strive for serious roles appealing to award voters, there’s an inherent desire to return to lighter, enjoyable projects. When asked about taking on a lively, action-packed role such as the “outlandishly entertaining action movie” G20 (as described by The Times), she enthusiastically agreed: “Absolutely! I was craving some humor in my work.
She mentioned that there are just two individuals you should consider owing something to: your six-year-old and eighty-year-old selves. She noted this because the opportunity to play a full-blown action hero in ‘G20’ made ‘six-year-old Viola excitedly squeal.’
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to be part of the star-studded cast in “G20,” alongside Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Antony Starr. You can catch this movie exclusively on Prime Video starting April 20!
