Vaughn recently told Collider that he’s teaming up with director S. Craig Zahler again for a new period mafia film called The Bookie & the Bruiser. He expressed his excitement about the project, calling it a “very fun, very cool movie.” It’s been eight years since Zahler’s last film, Dragged Across Concrete, which received mixed reviews. That film, which starred Vaughn and Mel Gibson, faced controversy that likely delayed production on his next project.
According to World of Reel, filming for The Bookie & The Bruiser is expected to begin in 2026. The publication also reports that Theo James, known for his role in The Monkey, has replaced Adrien Brody in the film. Details shared by Collider reveal that Vince Vaughn will play an Italian-American WWII veteran who teams up with a Jewish bookie (played by Rossi) to become criminals. Their venture quickly puts them in the middle of a dangerous conflict between the Mafia and the Irish mob.
In addition to Dragged Across Concrete, Vaughn collaborated with director S. Craig Zahler on the 2017 crime thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99, where he portrayed a tough criminal who’s compelled to become a violent enforcer within the prison system. Zahler is known for his gritty, stylized films – often featuring intense violence and bleak subject matter. His films stand out due to their dark and uncompromising nature, showcasing a director who isn’t afraid to deliver his unique vision.
Now that the director is teaming up with Vaughn once more for The Bookie & The Bruiser, it will be interesting to see how the director’s filmmaking style has changed in the last eight years. Considering the new movie’s action-packed story, viewers can likely anticipate the same level of intense violence and chaotic energy they’ve come to expect, particularly with Vaughn’s involvement.
