As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a silver screen legend, I must admit that the impending political foray of Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved stars, stirs a peculiar mix of anticipation and nostalgia within me. The echoes of M.G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, and N.T. Rama Rao resonate in the air as Vijay embarks on this new journey, much like the footsteps of a seasoned actor stepping onto an unfamiliar stage.
Vijay, the well-known Tamil cinema actor who might be transitioning fully into politics soon, has established the title, producer, director, and planned release date for his 69th film – presumably his last.
An upcoming, unnamed movie will be helmed by director H. Vinoth, who has previously worked with Ajith Kumar in his last three films: “Nerkonda Paarvai” (2019), “Valimai” (2022), and “Thunivu” (2023). This new project will be produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the banner of KVN Productions, with Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith N.K. serving as co-producers. Notably, KVN Productions is simultaneously working on Geethu Mohandas’ “Toxic – A Fairytale for Grown Ups” along with Monster Mind Creations, the production company owned by actor Yash of “K.G.F.” fame.
Anirudh Ravichander, known as “Leo” and “Jawan,” will create the soundtrack for an upcoming movie. Although specific plot information hasn’t been disclosed yet, a teaser on the film’s poster suggests it will revolve around a champion of democracy. The movie is slated to hit theaters in October 2025 in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages.
Vijay’s movie titled “The Greatest of All Time” is now playing in theaters and has already earned over 46.8 million dollars. As per ComScore, during the most recent weekend, it ranked as the ninth highest earning film worldwide.
Vijay, a well-known actor who goes by that name and was originally Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, established the Tamil Nadu Victory Federation (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) political party this year and serves as its leader. He’s the most recent figure from the southern Indian state’s film industry to enter politics, following in the footsteps of actors M.G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, and screenwriter M. Karunanidhi, all of whom became chief ministers of Tamil Nadu after their involvement in politics.
Ramachandran and fellow actor N.T. Rama Rao, hailing from the adjacent state of Andhra Pradesh, continued their acting careers even as they delved into politics.
Notable Tamil film actors involved in politics today include Kamal Haasan, who launched the Makkal Needhi Maiam party in 2018, and R. Sarath Kumar, whose All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK), established in 2007, recently merged with India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party this year. Superstar Rajinikanth, who has shown interest in politics for quite some time, officially entered the political sphere in 2017. However, he later disbanded his Rajini Makkal Mandram party in 2021, stating that he no longer wished to pursue a career in this field.
