Viggo Mortensen Recast as Aragorn in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Andy Serkis, who directed and played Gollum, is planning a return to the world of Middle-earth with a new movie, Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum. The film will feature some of the actors from Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy, but Viggo Mortensen won’t be reprising his role as Aragorn, as the part has been given to a new actor.

The new film will explore events leading up to or happening alongside those in The Fellowship of the Ring. Viggo Mortensen was about 40 when the first movie was filmed, and at 67 now, it might be difficult for even advanced digital technology to convincingly make him appear younger for the role.

Instead of previously announced casting, Jamie Dornan will now play Aragorn, known as Strider in the latest promotional content.

Serkis Confirms Some Returning Cast

During Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation, Andy Serkis shared details about the upcoming Hunt for Gollum project.

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films have always featured a strong cast, and the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum will be no different. Andy Serkis announced he’s bringing back some favorite actors from previous Middle-earth movies, as well as introducing some exciting new faces to Tolkien’s world.

Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Andy Serkis will direct and also play Gollum and Sméagol again. It’s currently unknown if the movie will depict Gollum before the Ring completely changed how he looked.

I’m really hoping Viggo Mortensen might come back as Aragorn! He’s said he loved playing the character, which is a great sign. But he’s also been realistic about it. He told GQ he’d only consider returning if he felt right for the role, considering his age and how much time has passed. He’s not just going to do it for the sake of it, and I respect that – it has to be a good fit for both him and the character. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that ‘Hunt for Gollum’ could be that project!

Because of this, many fans wondered if Viggo Mortensen wouldn’t reprise his role, and if someone else would play Aragorn instead.

The Search for Aragorn

Just before the CinemaCon event, Andy Serkis announced that the actor playing Aragorn would be replaced. He didn’t reveal any potential candidates, but acknowledged the widespread guessing. “There’s a lot of talk about who it might be,” he told Ebaster, “but we’re actively looking for a new actor to take on the role.”

It’s possible Jamie Dornan was considered for the role earlier than reported. Dornan, famous for playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies, is about the same age as Viggo Mortensen was when he first portrayed Aragorn. Joining the cast of The Hunt for Gollum are Leo Woodall as Halvard, a fellow Dúnedain, and Kate Winslet as a new character named Marigol. Lee Pace will also return as the elf Thranduil, a role he played in The Hobbit films.

Release Date and Franchise Expectations

Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters December 17, 2027.

Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn is still considered the best by many, so choosing a new actor to play the part means Jamie Dornan will be closely watched by devoted fans. He’s not only taking on the role, but also the significant legacy and history that come with it.

Now that production is underway, viewers will be eager to see how the series blends familiar elements with fresh ideas, and if Jamie Dornan can successfully take on the iconic role of Strider.
