Video of Toby Keith’s Final Recording Session Unveiled in Emotional Moment During Tribute Special Taping in Nashville

As a long-time devotee of country music, I must admit that Monday night’s tribute to Toby Keith at Nashville‘s Bridgestone Arena was nothing short of emotional and poignant. The unexpected appearance of Keith himself on the overhead screens during his final recording session was an unexpected yet heartfelt moment that will surely linger in our memories for a long time.

During the “Toby Keith: American Icon” tribute event at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Monday evening, the most shocking moment came when Toby Keith made an unexpected appearance – not live, but on the overhead screens, a recording from what was described as his final studio session.

Towards the finale of the star-studded concert, there was a poignant moment when Keith performed a cover of “Ships That Don’t Come In,” originally sung by Joe Diffie in 1992. Unfortunately, Diffie passed away due to COVID complications in 2020. As the house band played live, Keith, wearing studio headphones, emotionally sang the sorrowful chorus: “This one’s for all the soldiers who died in vain, the tormented souls locked within themselves, the homeless on Main Street, and those waiting hopelessly on the shore, spitting against the wind, and those who wait eternally for ships that never arrive.”

The video clip you see below is included in the upcoming NBC special, which will be broadcast on August 28th. (Check out the fan-recorded video of the event below.)

Previously, a song version featuring harmonized lead vocals was made available on Hardy’s tribute album “Hixtape: Vol 3: Difftape,” which dropped in March, shortly following Keith’s passing. This version of the song combined Keith’s original lead vocals with Diffie’s and included a new part sung by Luke Combs. The footage revealed on Monday night was the first time fans got to listen to, or watch, the raw vocals from Keith’s last recording session.

During the closing acts of the night’s performance, several artists watched from the stage as they prepared for the final part of the show. A video montage of Keith during his final months was shown, followed by another emotional moment – a rendition of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” performed by Keith’s daughter, Krystal Keith. The recording session concluded with covers of two of Keith’s most iconic patriotic songs, “American Soldier,” sung by the concert’s special guest, Trace Adkins, and “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” led by Parker McCollum along with the entire cast.

During Keith’s performances, known for his frequent use of humor, there were playful instances during recording, such as when renowned cowgirl Lainey Wilson caused a great reaction from the audience by entering on horseback to perform “Beer for My Horses,” with Jamey Johnson contributing to the well-loved duet originally sung by Keith and Willie Nelson.

On December 14, 2023, Keith delivered his last show during a three-night stint at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas. Tragically, he passed away on February 5 of this year after a tough fight against gastric cancer. It was announced in March that he had been posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, with the election having taken place prior to his death.
