Video Game Voice Actors Are Going On Strike Over AI: "Enough Is Enough"

As a long-time fan of video games and a supporter of the hard work and dedication of SAG-AFTRA members, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing negotiations between the union and gaming companies regarding the use of AI in game development.

As a devoted supporter of SAG-AFTRA members in the video game industry, I’m sad to share that after extensive negotiations over the past 18 months regarding the Interactive Media Agreement, which is essential for major gaming companies when producing big-budget games, have proven unsuccessful. Frustrated by the lack of progress on key concerns, particularly those surrounding the use of AI in place of human voiceovers and performances, these talented professionals have decided to take a stand. Starting at 12:01 AM PT on July 26, they will commence a strike.

In the press release, it is stated that any game intending to hire SAG-AFTRA actors for covered work must adopt either the new Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement, or the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. According to the announcement, these accords provide essential protections regarding AI (Artificial Intelligence) for the union members.

For several months, SAG-AFTRA has been working to reach a consensus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in game development, particularly in replacing human voice actors and motion-capture performers with AI. In January, SAG-AFTRA made headlines with a contentious deal they struck with Replica Studios, an AI voice software company. This agreement, which effectively endorsed AI voice acting in video games, sparked backlash from many voice actors who felt they hadn’t been included in the decision-making process.

Currently, SAG-AFTRA, which represents artists seeking convenient working conditions, is holding negotiations with these gaming companies: [Studios’ Names]

  • Activision Productions Inc.
  • Blindlight LLC
  • Disney Character Voices Inc.
  • Electronic Arts Productions Inc.
  • Formosa Interactive LLC
  • Insomniac Games Inc.
  • Llama Productions LLC
  • Take 2 Productions Inc.
  • VoiceWorks Productions Inc.
  • WB Games Inc.

The exact games under threat from the strike aren’t obvious at this point. However, it’s reasonable to anticipate potential setbacks for those titles still in the development stage, as opposed to nearly completed projects ready for release. The duration of the strike is uncertain.

As a long-time gamer with a deep appreciation for the art and technology behind video games, I’ve been following the ongoing debate about the use of AI in gaming with great interest. Having witnessed the evolution of game mechanics and graphics over the years, I can’t help but be intrigued by the potential that AI holds for creating more immersive gaming experiences.

As a gamer and member of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee, I’ve spent the past eighteen months at the table trying to reach a fair deal for AI protections. But unfortunately, it seems our employers aren’t on the same page as us. Instead of reasonable safeguards, they’re pushing for exploitative practices.

In 2023, film and TV actors represented by SAG-AFTRA went on strike. A major point of contention during the negotiations was the use of artificial intelligence.

“SAG-AFTRA’s president, Fran Drescher, stated that the union won’t agree to a contract permitting corporations to harm their members through AI misuse. It’s time for a change. Once these companies present a fair agreement, we’ll be prepared to discuss terms.”

Gaming companies have expressed their displeasure with SAG-AFTRA’s decision to go on strike, making their feelings known in reaction.

“Audrey Cooling, representing the video game producers’ side in the IMA, expressed her disappointment over SAG-AFTRA’s decision to withdraw from negotiations when we were on the brink of reaching an agreement. However, we are still prepared to continue talks. We have made significant progress, with agreements reached on 24 out of 25 proposals. These include substantial wage hikes and enhanced safety measures. Our proposal addresses SAG-AFTRA’s concerns and goes beyond that by providing performers with consent and fair compensation for their AI work – a provision unmatched in the entertainment industry.”
