Video Game Adaptation With Only 10% on RT Hits No. 10 on the Streaming Charts 2 Years After Box Office Flop

The movie, once considered a failure after performing poorly in cinemas, has surprisingly become popular. It’s now a top 10 hit on the Starz streaming service, two years after its disappointing theatrical release.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Borderlands entered the Starz Top 10 Movies chart in the US at number 10. It’s the only new movie on the list, while The Man in the White Van, Good Fortune, and Ballerina continue to hold the top three spots.

The video game movie released in 2024 is also performing well on Prime Video in Germany and Austria, consistently ranking as either the most popular or second most popular film there for the past four days.

Borderlands Couldn’t Win Over Fans or Critics

It’s surprising how well the Borderlands movie is currently doing, considering it wasn’t popular with critics or viewers when it was released in August 2024. It currently has a low 10% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences only gave it a 48% rating.

Eli Roth was the main director for the Borderlands movie, filming most of it from April to June 2021. Later, in 2023, Tim Miller directed two weeks of additional filming because Roth was busy working on Thanksgiving. Roth and Joe Crombie wrote the movie’s script.

Cate Blanchett stars as Lilith in the live-action film, supported by Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jack Black voicing Claptrap, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, and Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi, as well as other talented actors.

The movie follows Lilith, a notorious bounty hunter with a hidden past, as she’s forced to return to her turbulent home planet, Pandora. She’s on a mission to locate the lost daughter of Atlas, a notoriously tough character. Along the way, Lilith unexpectedly teams up with a diverse group of unlikely allies.

This mismatched group of heroes will have to fight off aliens and ruthless bandits to reveal a powerful secret hidden on Pandora. The universe might depend on them, but their biggest battle will be for their relationships with each other.

Video Game Adaptations Remain All the Rage in Hollywood

The popularity of the Borderlands stream shows that video game adaptations can always attract viewers, even if it takes time. This is why Hollywood keeps trying to make them, and we’ve recently seen some successes like A Minecraft Movie and Iron Lung.

Next year, 2026, is set to bring three big-screen adaptations of popular video games. The first is Mortal Kombat II, which has just been announced. A key character, Johnny Cage, will finally appear in the sequel after not being featured in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie. He will be played by .

A new film based on the popular video game series is coming out later this year, offering a fresh story within that universe. Wrapping up 2026, Paramount will release a reboot of Street Fighter, starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji alongside other well-known actors.
