Vet forced to “deflate” kitten after rare condition leaves her filled with air

A very small, patterned kitten is becoming famous online after vets discovered she needed to have air removed from her body. She had a rare condition that was causing her to fill up with air.

A lost kitten named Zoe was brought to a vet’s office looking very swollen – almost like a balloon. Dr. Phil Caldwell, the vet, was so surprised by her condition that he shared her story on Instagram.

In a video, Caldwell explained that X-rays revealed the kitten had subcutaneous emphysema—basically, air trapped under its skin.

When Zoe first arrived, her appearance immediately stood out.

Caldwell took in a stray kitten yesterday and is now trying to help her. In a video, she explained that the kitten’s skin was filled with air, making her appear swollen, after gently checking for the issue.

The vet said this was one of the strangest cases he’d encountered in a long time. The dog was very gentle, but her body was severely bloated with air, making her look like a large balloon. He assured everyone they would do everything they could to help her.

Viewers quickly flooded the comments with messages hoping Zoe would recover.

“Oh my gosh, what can we do besides pray?” one person wrote. “Sweet angel is in the best care.”

Someone practically begged me to keep this little guy alive, hoping we could maybe even grow old together. It was seriously touching – and a little weird, honestly!

In a follow-up update, Caldwell said Zoe’s condition has already improved.

Good news about Zoe! The adorable kitten is recovering and doing much better, but she still needs time to fully heal, according to a recent update.

Subcutaneous emphysema happens when air gets stuck under the skin. In animals, this can be caused by injuries, infections, or other trauma that let air escape and become trapped.

Air gets trapped under the skin and within tissues, causing swelling. Vets can usually feel a distinctive crackling sensation when they gently touch the area.

Treatment usually involves making sure the animal is stable and figuring out what caused the problem, then letting any trapped air slowly resolve on its own.

Zoe the kitten is looking much better! The vet team says she’s eating well and slowly recovering, and the swelling is going down as trapped air is released from her body.

Okay, so this isn’t the first time a cat has become an internet sensation this year because of something weird happening with their health. I remember back in February, there was a cat going viral with huge eyes – apparently, it was a really rare condition. And before that, another cat had four ears! It’s been a strange year for feline fame, that’s for sure.
