Venom: The Last Dance’s Post-Credits Scene Makes Closure Knull and Void

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s traversed through the labyrinthine world of superhero cinema since the days of Christopher Reeve’s Superman, I must say that Venom: The Last Dance is a fitting finale to Tom Hardy’s electrifying portrayal of Eddie Brock and his slithering, tentacled partner. The film offers a compelling narrative, filled with action, suspense, and the emotional depth that only the complex relationship between a journalist and his alien symbiote can provide.

Spoilers ahead for the plot and ending of Venom: The Last Dance.

The movie “Venom: The Last Dance” marks the end of Tom Hardy’s character Eddie Brock’s journey alongside his symbiote partner Venom, culminating in a heartfelt confrontation that offers both characters resolution. According to Tom Hardy and director Kelly Marcel, “The Last Dance” wraps up the Venom trilogy which started in 2018 with the first film and continued in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021). However, hints in the mid- and post-credit scenes imply that Venom may have more adventures ahead.

The Mid-Credits Scene — the King in Black

In “The Last Dance”, the main storyline centers around Venom’s mission to prevent Knull (portrayed by Andy Serkis), the creator of symbiotes and the harbinger of the Void – a darkness older than the universe, from escaping his cosmic prison. For Knull to break free, he needs the Codex, an artifact forged through perfect symbiosis, which Venom and Eddie have achieved. The Codex can only be destroyed if either Venom or Eddie dies. In Area 51, where several captive symbiotes are housed, they join forces to halt Knull’s army of Xenophages from obtaining the Codex. Eventually, Venom makes the ultimate sacrifice by destroying the Codex, giving Eddie a fresh start in life.

The story of Knull doesn’t conclude there. In a post-credit scene, he hints that with Venom out of the picture, the universe is still in danger from him. As IGN was told by Marvel’s creators, “The King in Black” is too powerful for a one-off appearance. This film introduces Knull, but it only scratches the surface of his story. The most formidable villains in Marvel’s history are developed over time.

The Post-Credits Scene — It’s Alive!

In the beginning of the movie, Rex Strickland (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) mentions that the Venom symbiote is shedding, scattering small parts of itself as it strives to survive. A trace of this shedding was observed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). In The Last Dance, Strickland manages to capture a fragment of Venom, but it’s unclear how many such fragments may be scattered. However, one was indeed discovered – by a cockroach, as seen in the post-credit scene of the most recent Venom film. This symbiote-infested cockroach came into contact with a test tube containing the electricity-based symbiote Agony, causing a shock to the Venom symbiote, hinting at its potential resurrection.

It appears that Venom, or a similar version, may reappear in future films. However, don’t assume that Eddie Brock will be his partner right away. Venom chose to let Eddie live a normal life and find happiness, so he likely won’t interfere with that. Instead, the film introduces a new character towards its end: Agent Thompson, who fights under Strickland’s command and loses both legs in battle. This might remind comic book readers of Flash Thompson, Peter Parker’s old school bully turned friend, who loses his legs in war and bonds with the Venom symbiote to walk and carry out missions worldwide as Agent Venom. Shifting focus to a new character seems like the logical next move for the Venom franchise, setting it on a course for global and cosmic adventures.
