As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who has lived through the highs and lows of Venom’s cinematic journey, I must say that Venom: The Last Dance left me with a mix of emotions. On one hand, it was a satisfying conclusion to Eddie Brock’s story arc, but on the other, the prospect of no more Venom movies is bittersweet.
Prior to the premiere of Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy consistently expressed that this would be his last portrayal as Eddie Brock/Venom. With the movie now in cinemas, Kelly Marcel, the screenwriter and director, is voicing her opinions about the ending and its implications for the franchise’s future.
Warning: There are massive spoilers ahead for the ending and post-credits scenes from Venom: The Last Dance. If you haven’t seen the film or don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading now.
It appears that Hardy wasn’t joking when he referred to this movie as his final appearance in the Venom series, as it seems to conclude any potential sequels for the character. In the film, the Venom symbiote saved Eddie Brock and Earth from Knull by joining forces with the invading xenophages and giving up its own life. This leaves Eddie living but now without his unique companion, just an ordinary man again.
Marcel shared with EW that it was always part of the plan for him and Hardy to conclude the Venom series after three films, backed by Sony’s agreement.
According to Marcel, we had envisioned the story as a three-act structure from the beginning of Venom, and we knew how it would conclude. It’s something truly unique, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate. Sony has been fantastic collaborators, backing what I believe is a daring choice.
In the ending of the movie, Eddie Brock has a peaceful departure, reminiscing about his companion. However, the main antagonist, Knull (portrayed by Andy Serkis), is still imprisoned on his planet… for now. Although Knull’s escape plan was thwarted in this narrative, the post-credits scene hints that he will make another attempt. And unfortunately for everyone involved, there won’t be a Venom around to foil his plans this time.
According to Marcel, we’ve always been fascinated by the enigmatic supervillain, Knull, who is both massive, incredible, and terrifying. We wanted to delve deeper into his story in this film. Since xenophages are featured in the movie, they are essentially Knull’s offspring, along with symbiotes, so someone must have sent the xenophages. However, Knull is such a colossal character that this film serves as an introduction to him. We’re confident there will be many more tales about him. A single Knull movie wouldn’t suffice.
It’s been shown in the comics that both Venom and Eddie Brock have managed to evade death on several occasions. However, it’s uncertain whether Venom will make a reappearance in this particular narrative or which movie will pick up the Knull storyline initiated in The Last Dance.
Venom: The Last Dance is now playing in theaters.
