‘Venom’ Star Tom Hardy ‘Would Love to Fight Spider-Man’; Director Teases Future With Knull: ‘There Are Many Symbiote Stories to Tell’

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of Tom Hardy‘s Venom finally squaring off against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is nothing short of exhilarating. The anticipation has been building for years, and as someone who vividly remembers the thrill of seeing Superman and Batman on the silver screen for the first time, I can only imagine what this showdown would feel like.

Despite “Venom: The Last Dance” marking the end of Tom Hardy’s run as the villain in the Sony Spider-Man trilogy, he remains eager for the opportunity to see his iconic symbiote character go up against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

On a bustling Friday evening at New York Comic Con, Hardy unveiled his forthcoming film, due for release in cinemas next week. He declared that he stands prepared to engage in combat with Spider-Man, right now.

As a thrill-seeking cinema enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement at the prospect of squaring off against Spider-Man. The urge to engage him in combat right now is palpable. If given the opportunity today, I’d leap at it without hesitation, 100 percent committed. I would never rule out the possibility, as we have meticulously crafted Venom for the big screen, and ‘The Last Dance’ marks the culmination of this trilogy – a project we are incredibly enthusiastic about.

Once more, I step into the role of Eddie Brock, the human aspect of the Venom symbiote, in “The Last Dance.” Even though there have been hints dropped throughout the years and countless Spider-Man enthusiasts have longed for a confrontation, I haven’t clashed with the wall-crawler up until now.

Indeed, we might see more films centered around symbiotes in the future. The latest Venom trailer hinted at Knull, an evil, extraterrestrial being who created the symbiote and was recently debuted in Marvel comics. In the trailer, there’s a quick glimpse of him seated on a dark throne with long, flowing white hair, reminiscent of his comic book portrayal.

Director Kelly Marcel shared some insights about Knull during a presentation, stating that he’s such a vast character that you can’t casually meet him once and be done. She described the brief appearance of Knull as a tantalizing preview. The storyline for Eddie and Venom concludes here, but since there are numerous symbiote tales in the lore, there are many avenues to explore, and perhaps some Easter eggs have been hidden in this production that could spark further adventures.

Following ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ in 2021, ‘The Last Dance’ continues the story. As indicated by the official synopsis, Eddie and Venom are being pursued from both their worlds. With the noose tightening around them, they are compelled to make a heart-wrenching choice that will mark the end of their partnership, symbolized as Venom and Eddie’s final dance.

Apart from Hardy, the actors also feature Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham in this production.

Additionally arriving this year is “Kraven the Hunter,” a film where Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes on the role of the big game hunter from the Spider-Man comics. Unlike previous films like “Venom” and “Morbius,” which were rated PG-13, “Kraven” will be the first Spidey spinoff to carry an R rating. The cast includes Russell Crowe as Kraven’s father, Ariana DeBose as his love interest Calypso, Fred Hechinger as his brother and the master of disguise Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as the villainous Rhino, and Christopher Abbott as the mercenary known as the Foreigner.

Currently, only “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter” have confirmed release dates within Sony’s Spider-Man universe. The animated film “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” set in a trilogy that traverses dimensions featuring Miles Morales and multiple web-slingers, has yet to be given a release date since it was postponed. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Destin Daniel Cretton, director of “Shang-Chi,” has agreed to direct a fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, but an official announcement is still pending.

This week, Holland shared on a podcast that he and his Spider-Man: Far From Home co-star, Zendaya, have both perused the script for “Spider-Man 4” not long ago.

He mentioned that they have a concept, a proposal, and a preliminary version, which is impressive. It requires refinement, but the writers are doing commendable work. I took a look at it three weeks ago, and it sparked something in me. Zendaya and I went through it together, and at times we were so excited that we found ourselves jumping around our living room, feeling like this could indeed be a movie worthy of our fans’ appreciation.
