As a movie reviewer with a background in women’s rights advocacy and a deep appreciation for films that shed light on overlooked stories, I find myself drawn to Marianna Brennand’s “Manas.” The trailer presents a raw, gripping narrative that resonates with my personal experiences and convictions.
The trailer for “Manas” by Marianna Brennand has been unveiled, marking its world debut at Venice Days – an additional section of the Venice Film Festival. International distribution of the film is managed by Bendita Film Sales.
The movie takes place on Marajó Island within the Amazon rainforest. Marcielle resides close to the riverbank with her father, mother, and three siblings. Inspired by her mother’s remarks, she admires her elder sister who is believed to have escaped their circumstances by supposedly finding a suitable partner among the boats that travel through the area.
Over time, Tielle’s dreamlike perceptions crumble, trapping her in a cycle of abuse between two harmful environments. Growing more concerned about her younger sister’s well-being and their dismal future prospects, she resolves to challenge the oppressive establishment that dominates her family and the women in their community.
Luis Renart from Bendita praised “Manas” as a hauntingly captivating experience. In her impressive debut feature, Marianna Brennand has skillfully created a delicate and engrossing work that showcases a level of wisdom and strength typically uncommon in a first-time director. We are certain it will leave distributors and programmers worldwide both astonished and emotionally touched.
Filmmaker Walter Salles, serving as an associate producer, commented on Mariana Brennand’s ‘Manas’: “Mariana Brennad’s first feature film is exceptionally brilliant. The storytelling is rich in sensory and emotional depth, the performances are captivating, the direction is inventive, precise, and free of sentimentality. With ‘Manas’, Mariana invites us to explore a world unknown to us, illuminating its hidden struggles. This is an outstanding debut by a truly gifted director.”
In a statement, Brennand shared: “While conducting research for a documentary in the isolated Amazon rainforest villages, I encountered women who had experienced severe trauma since their youth. They were subjected to sexual abuse within their homes as well as commercial exploitation on barges, with few opportunities to flee. Regrettably, many women have stories of abuse – whether it’s sexual, moral, or psychological – that have left lasting emotional wounds.”
“Through ‘Manas,’ I aim to amplify the voices of unseen women and girls who often go unheard. These are the stories of countless women who have bravely shared their experiences with me, stories that need to be told. The Me Too movement and other women’s rights initiatives have been instrumental in breaking the silence on abuse worldwide, but there remains a vast group of women whose struggles remain hidden. I believe cinema can serve as a powerful tool for social and political change, and I hope ‘Manas’ will stir empathy in its viewers, addressing the taboo that shrouds the harsh reality faced by so many women.”
The screenplay was penned by Felipe Sholl, Marcelo Grabowsky, Brennand, Antonia Pellegrino, Camila Agustini, and Carolina Benevides. (or)
