Venice’ Critics Week Title ‘Peacock’ Starring ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Actor Sells to Major Territories for MK2 Films (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky tragicomedies, I am genuinely intrigued by the promising debut of Bernhard Wenger with “Peacock.” His unique perspective on societal values, as demonstrated in this film that satirically explores the ‘Rent-a-Friend’ concept, piques my interest.

MK2 Films has secured several significant agreements for “Peacock,” a film set to debut at the Venice Film Festival during the Critics’ Week segment.

Under the direction of promising newcomer, Bernhard Wenger, comes the film “Peacock”. This production features Albrecht Schuch, known for his role in “All Quiet on the Western Front”, as its leading actor.

The unusual, comedic-drama explores the idea of renting friends, which is popular in both Japan and the United States, and offers a humorous critique of societal norms.

The movie “Peacock” revolves around Matthias (Schuch), a man who works at a rent-a-friend agency, struggling to be genuine and open in his personal life once more. Wenger came up with the idea for this film on a research trip to Japan and based the character of Matthias on an employee he met there from the same agency.

The movie has been acquired for distribution in various regions: Pyramide (France), I Wonder (Italy), O Brother (Benelux), Another World (Scandinavia), Rosebud (Greece), New Horizon (Poland), Magic (CIS), Arthouse (Ukraine), Kino Pavasaris (Baltics), Catchplay (Taiwan), and Pictureworks (India and Airlines). The film will be released in Germany and Austria by Wild Bunch Germany. “Peacock” is a production of NGF Geyrhalter Filmproduktion and Cala Filmproduktion.

A rising filmmaker from Austria, Wenger, has been honing his craft. He wrote his script during a residency at the Cinefondation of the Cannes Film Festival and was a participant at Berlinale Talents in 2020. His short films, such as “Keeping Balance,” “A Man Proposes to His Girlfriend on a Mountain,” and “Excuse Me, I’m Searching for the Ping-Pong Room and My Girlfriend,” have been screened at various film festivals, including those held in Chicago, Palm Springs, Nashville, and other cities.
