As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I can confidently say that “Peacock” is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to my collection. The concept of ‘Rent a Friend’ agencies, while seemingly bizarre, resonates deeply with our increasingly isolating modern society.
The debut trailer for the movie titled “Peacock,” featuring Albrecht Schuch, who starred in “All Quiet on the Western Front,” has been unveiled by MK2 prior to its world premiere at the Venice Critic’s Week film competition.
In a fresh cinematic venture by emerging Austrian director Bernhard Wenger, we find an offbeat blend of comedy and tragedy, titled “Rent a Friend.” This film explores the peculiar concept of ‘renting friends’ popular in Japan and the U.S., offering a biting critique on modern societal norms and values.
The movie “Peacock” narrates the tale of Matthias (Schuch), a man who works at a rent-a-friend service, struggling to be genuine and vulnerable in his personal relationships. Wenger conceived this film idea following a study trip to Japan, where he encountered an employee from the agency that inspired the character of Matthias.
“In essence, the movie’s plot isn’t some complex, futuristic nightmare, but a troubling scenario I’m concerned might soon be our reality,” Wenger explained. He also mentioned that his inspiration comes from Scandinavian Cinema and British black comedy. Wenger further described the film as having “humor that is quite visual” and placing characters in “strange situations reminiscent of everyday life.”
Last year at the American Film Market, the team from MK2 Films, led by Fionnuala Jamison, initiated sales for the movie titled “Peacock”. This movie is set to be distributed in Germany and Austria by Wild Bunch Germany. However, MK2 Films will manage the international distribution of this film outside of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
“Peacock” is produced by NGF Geyrhalter Filmproduktion and Cala Filmproduktion.
