As a cinephile who has traversed through the labyrinth of cinematic worlds, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming release of “Harvest,” directed by the visionary Athina Rachel Tsangari. With a rich background in both acting and filmmaking, I am particularly drawn to films that blend artistic ingenuity with compelling narratives. The star-studded cast, including Caleb Landry Jones, Harry Melling, and Rosy McEwen, promises a captivating performance, as they delve into the complexities of their characters in this adaptation of Jim Crace’s acclaimed novel.
The film titled “Harvest,” helmed by Athina Rachel Tsangari (known for “Attenberg” and “Chevalier”) with Caleb Landry Jones as the lead actor, has been secured by Mubi across various regions prior to its debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Mubi is set to deliver the movie across the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, and Latin America. Details regarding the release dates will be shared over the next few months.
Set during a seven-day period filled with surreal events, “Harvest” follows a nameless village that mysteriously vanishes. The main characters, Walter Thirsk, who was once a townsperson and now farms, and the puzzled aristocrat Charles Kent, who serves as the local lord, have been friends since childhood. They are on the brink of experiencing an invasion from beyond their borders: the shock of modernization.
In the film “Harvest,” we find Landry Jones, who gained recognition for his roles in Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and won the Cannes Best Actor award for his performance in “Nitram” in 2021. Joining him are Harry Melling, known from “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” Rosy McEwen from “Blue Jean” and “The Alienist,” Arinzé Kene who appeared in “Ear for Eye” and “I’m Your Woman,” Thalissa Teixeira, star of “Alice & Jack” and “Two Weeks to Live,” and Frank Dillane, seen in “Renegade Nell” and “The Essex Serpent.”
The film “Harvest” is jointly produced by several entities: Tsangari, Marie-Elena Dyche, Rebecca O’Brien (for Sixteen Films), Joslyn Barnes (for Louverture Films), Michael Weber and Viola Fügen (The Match Factory). It also has contributions from Haos Film and Faliro House Productions, Why Not Productions, Meraki Films, and Roag Films.
The movie received funding from BBC Film, Screen Scotland, and Ashland Hill Media Finance in the United Kingdom; Bayerischer Rundfunk ARTE and Film under Medienstiftung NRW in Germany; the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication EKOME and the Greek Film Centre in Greece; Arte France and Arte France Cinéma, the Artemis Rising Foundation, and In Bloom. In simpler terms, multiple organizations from various countries including the UK, Germany, Greece, and France contributed to the financing of this film.
The Match Factory is handling international sales on “Harvest.”
