As a longtime fan of thought-provoking cinema that delves deep into human emotions and societal issues, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Stranger Eyes” by Yeo Siew Hua! With his knack for crafting captivating narratives and his ability to elicit raw, authentic performances from his talented cast, this film promises to be a masterpiece that will leave audiences pondering long after the credits roll.
For the first time, we’re given a sneak peek at “Stranger Eyes,” the highly-anticipated film by Singaporean director Yeo Siew Hua. This movie will be competing in the principal category at the Venice Film Festival.
In this movie, following the enigma of their infant daughter’s vanishing act, a young pair encounters puzzling videos showing their everyday routines, including their most private moments. The authorities establish observation around their residence in an attempt to apprehend the peeping tom. However, the strain on the family intensifies as secrets are exposed and they feel watched from every angle by unseen eyes.
In 2018, Yeo, who won the highest honor at the Locarno Film Festival for “A Land Imagined”, has chosen to work with renowned Taiwanese actors Lee Kang-Sheng (“What Time Is It There?”, “Days”) and Wu Chien-Ho (“A Sun”) on this film. The cast also includes newcomers Anicca Panna and Xenia Tan, as well as veterans Vera Chen (“Boluomi”) and Pete Teo (“Barbarian Invasion”).
The film has been jointly produced by Fran Borgia (Akanga Film Asia, known for “A Land Imagined” and “Tiger Stripes”), Stefano Centini (Volos Films, with credits like “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” and “The Settlers”), Jean-Laurent Csinidis (Films de Force Majeure, famous for “Little Palestine, Diary of a Siege” and “A Holy Family”), and Alex C. Lo (Cinema Inutile, recognized for “Club Zero” and “The Settlers”). Playtime is responsible for international distribution of the film.
The film titled “Stranger Eyes” was produced collaboratively by Tiger Tiger Pictures, Incantation Films, Epicentre Films, Volya Films, and Playtime. It received participation from the Singapore Film Commission, Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca), L’aide Aux Cinemas Du Monde, Centre National Du Cinema Et De L’image Animee, Institut Français, and Region Provence-alpes-côte D’azur. Additionally, it was supported by Purin Pictures.
In a modern cityscape, filled with high population density and constant surveillance, we unknowingly bear witness to the lives of others. This daily act of observing and being observed becomes routine. The concept of ‘Stranger Eyes’ explores these intricate relationships. At a time when our sense of connection through visual media is seemingly boundless yet detached.
Borgia stated: “The film ‘Stranger Eyes’ is a one-of-a-kind production that we’ve been working on for quite some time. Thanks to a committed and gifted team, it has transformed into a global collaboration, symbolizing the dynamic expansion of Asian independent cinema. We’re excited to present it to viewers in Venice and globally.”
