Venice-Bound Trump-Era Documentary ‘Homegrown’ Unveils First Clip (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of watching documentaries that delve into the complexities of society and politics, I must say that Michael Premo’s “Homegrown” has piqued my interest. The film’s focus on right-wing activists during the 2020 U.S. election cycle is not only timely but also critical in understanding the current political climate.

In simpler terms, the initial sneak peek of “Homegrown,” a documentary directed by Michael Premo that follows right-wing activists in the context of the 2020 United States presidential race, has been revealed.

The movie set to debut at Venice Critics’ Week is portrayed as a raw account of internal American conflicts, providing an authentic snapshot of a divided United States.

This documentary chronicles the journey of three conservative advocates as they support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and strive to create a movement that endures beyond his presidency. The film documents their transformation from the summer of 2020 up until the post-election period, during which they assert that the election was fraudulent and protest on the streets.

Premo, both the director, producer, and cinematographer, shared with EbMaster: “In this century, democracies don’t crumble dramatically like a military takeover, but rather quietly, as trust in their principles weakens. A democracy thrives when its written laws are supported by strong, unwritten democratic customs and ideals. In the U.S., these democratic customs have been gradually weakening since approximately 1994. Now, there’s a rising group of individuals questioning democracy’s capacity to safeguard their interests. They resort to violence and threats of violence to advocate for their beliefs. Our goal is to gain insight into who these people are and what they stand for.”

“Far too often, we let our differences define us, rather than focusing on our shared characteristics. In today’s world, many of us are trapped within our own echo chambers, seldom engaging with those who hold differing views. This leads to oversimplifying individuals based on their opinions, reducing them to flat, one-dimensional characters. People and the systems they interact with are intricate and multifaceted. When we pigeonhole people into stereotypes, our solutions to problems become equally simplistic. Phrases like ‘they just need more education’ may seem reasonable at first glance, but they can be rooted in classism and elitism. The challenges we face are complex, so if we truly aspire to create a diverse democracy, we must deepen our understanding of everyone within it. That’s why Premo emphasized the importance of having genuine conversations with those who embrace us-versus-them politics.”

The movie was filmed at various places such as Salt Lake City, New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Portland, and Washington D.C.

As a passionate movie reviewer, I find myself captivated by a production that took me on an unparalleled journey from 2018 to the autumn of 2021. This remarkable film offers a unique perspective, serving as a time capsule of sorts, chronicling extraordinary events unfolding right beside us – a rare and compelling passenger’s view.
