Less than a week after its debut on Steam, the game Velev has unexpectedly halted player access. This is considerably less time than Concord’s shutdown, but it’s important to note that this is a small, independent team’s project, unlike PlayStation Studios. Velev was an action RPG with PvPvE and some battle royale elements, developed by the team Chaf. On its Steam page, out of 86 player reviews, Velev received only a 56% positive feedback score.
The odd story of Velev, an interesting indie game that shut down in less than a week
The tale of Velev seems to have an intriguing fantasy foundation. What happened was a baffling catastrophe causing a civilization to vanish beneath the earth. Today, explorers delve into the underworld in search of riches and artifacts, but they must be wary not only of monsters, but also rival players. Unfortunately, I haven’t had an opportunity to play it myself, so my insights are based on descriptions and gameplay videos. The game mechanics seem to have similarities with MOBA games such as League of Legends, and there is also a sprawling map that gradually shrinks, much like Fortnite or PUBG, compelling players to move towards specific zones of the map.
Four days following the Early Access release, a post titled “VELEV Service Shutdown Announcement” appeared on Steam. The developers stated that they had failed to reach the necessary point to continue maintaining and developing Velev, despite their best efforts. They further explained that they couldn’t secure the investment from venture capitalists or larger partners needed to sustain the project. This unfortunate turn of events, occurring shortly after launch, may raise suspicions similar to those seen in The Day Before controversy. However, it was also mentioned that the developers had entered Early Access with the expectation that sales would provide the financial backing for their team to continue working on the game. Regrettably, this did not prove to be the case.
In the same message, the developers revealed their plans for the future, including a shift to a Free-to-Play model and full refunds for all purchases. Shortly afterward, the game was taken off Steam on April 15th. The developers later posted again, expressing that they had hoped to maintain the game as Free-to-Play, but unfortunately, they were forced to close the servers due to unforeseen circumstances. They also expressed regret for the unexpected turn of events and apologized to their players. It appears that this independent studio made a valiant effort, but unfortunately, things did not go according to plan.
Regrettably, it appears as though the tale of Velev has reached its conclusion. It’s challenging to envision circumstances under which this compact game might resurface. For now, our main expectation is that Chaf, the studio responsible for this game, has gained some valuable insights from this experience and will eventually work on another project in the future.
