The process for selecting Pope Francis’ successor will commence on May 7th, according to statements made by the Vatican on Monday, following a private gathering of cardinals within the Vatican, marking the initial such meeting since his funeral over the weekend.
130 cardinals from different parts of the globe are gathering secretively in the Sistine Chapel for the purpose of choosing the new head of the Catholic Church, and this event is already generating dramatic scenes reminiscent of a Hollywood movie.
On Monday, Italian reporters queried Vatican authorities about whether Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who was found guilty of financial misconduct within the Vatican and held significant influence, would participate in the upcoming proceedings, given his past conviction.
Despite Pope Francis stripping Becciu of his cardinal privileges in 2020 due to his involvement in a Vatican financial scandal over a $150 million investment in London real estate, which resulted in significant losses for the Holy See, Becciu argues that he should still be eligible to participate in the conclave as he has not been officially expelled from the College of Cardinals. Although found guilty by a Vatican court, Becciu continues to assert his innocence and is currently appealing his conviction.
On Monday, cardinals deliberated over the matter during a private session, yet they were unable to reach a decision, according to the Vatican’s statement.
It’s worth noting that 108 electors, handpicked by Francis, generally embody his idea of a diverse and open church. To choose a new pope, a two-thirds consensus among these electors is required.
There are various contenders being discussed as potential future popes, one notable name being Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who currently serves as the president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference.
However, Christopher Lamb, CNN’s Vatican Correspondent, recently shared with EbMaster that the competition remains wide open, emphasizing the shift in the origins of potential popes.
A diverse group of individuals hail from regions that previously lacked cardinals, making it a truly global community. There are Cardinals from Tonga, Haiti, Central Africa, and even Mongolia. It’s quite an unforeseeable mix,” he noted.
Similar to the film “Conclave,” directed by Edward Berger, featuring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, during a conclave, electors are sealed off from external influences throughout the process, while onlookers closely monitor the smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel’s chimney. If the smoke is black, it signifies that no consensus has been reached following each round of voting. However, if a new pope has been chosen, the smoke turns white and bells are tolled. The most recent conclave, in 2013, saw the election of Pope Francis within two days.
Following Pope Francis’s passing on April 21st, there was an increase in viewers tuning into Berger’s “Conclave” from their homes, as per the latest reports by EbMaster. Interestingly, the movie has also been re-released in Italian theaters over the past week.
