The highly anticipated Indian film, Varanasi, has revealed its title and first look. The movie stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, known for her roles in shows and films like Quantico, 7 Khoon Maaf, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Citadel. It’s directed by S.S. Rajamouli, the director of the popular and critically praised film RRR.
Rajamouli, the director and writer, is currently filming his latest movie on location around the world. Although the exact storyline is still under wraps, its scope and adventurous nature are being compared to films like Indiana Jones and James Bond.
I just got a first glimpse of the new film, Varanasi, and the title’s finally been revealed! The teaser is wild – it starts way back in 512 AD in the city of Varanasi, then jumps forward to 2027 with an asteroid hurtling towards Earth, and then all the way to Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf. It’s a whirlwind of amazing visuals across different eras and locations, and it ends with a really cool shot of Mahesh Babu riding a bull. Along with the video clip, a poster featuring Priyanka Chopra Jonas was also revealed. She plays a character named Mandakini, and the poster shows her in a saree, powerfully firing a gun while standing on a rock amidst a dramatic, fiery backdrop. You can see the poster below.
The film stars Babu, Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Originally known as Globe Trotter, it’s now titled Varanasi. It’s scheduled for a global release in 2027 in both regular and IMAX cinemas.
Following the huge success of the 2022 action film RRR, which became a global phenomenon, Varanasi now has the potential to achieve similar international recognition. RRR received excellent reviews, with a 96% rating from critics and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film earned an impressive $166 million worldwide and was so popular it was re-released in theaters several times.
S.S. Rajamouli, the director known for the blockbuster Baahubali films (The Beginning and The Conclusion), is now working on Varanasi. Fans can expect the same exciting action, grand scope, and beautiful visuals that made his previous films so popular.
