As a long-time fan of the Silent Hill series, I must say that the recent events surrounding the Silent Hill 2 remake have left me both baffled and amused. On one hand, it’s disheartening to see the vandalism on Wikipedia pages and the apparent discord within the fanbase. However, on the other hand, it’s rather entertaining to witness such passionate responses from fans, even if they are misguided.
The general consensus among critics is that the Silent Hill 2 remake is well-received, but some disgruntled fans have taken issue with it. Notably, Wikipedia has had to protect the remake’s page due to numerous users tampering with the displayed review scores, as reported by Eurogamer.
Over the weekend, the Silent Hill subreddit became aware of an incident involving the game. The focus was primarily on the Reception section of its Wikipedia page, which combines OpenCritic and Metacritic percentage scores along with individual reviews from various publications. On this page, the Metacritic score dropped significantly from 87/100 to 27/100, and some reviews were changed from positive scores like “9/10” or “0/5” to extremely negative ones such as “0/10” or “2/10”. For instance, a review by TopMob’s Mark Delaney initially gave Silent Hill 2 remake a 9/10 rating, but it was altered to a 2/10 on the vandalized page.

At the point of release, the accurate ratings have been reinstated. The Reception area has a note suggesting that “more content is needed,” however, if you choose to expand it, a notice appears stating that the page is currently locked. As most articles can be modified by anyone, semi-protection is occasionally used to deter vandalism on highly visited pages, as the message explains. In the Protection log, the latest entry cites “repeated disruption of edits” as the reason for securing the page, with the status remaining unchanged until October 9.
In the editing history, changes primarily revolved around ensuring “precision” and addressing disruptive behavior. Although a single cause for the mischief has not been pinpointed, there have been persistent criticisms about the depiction of Angela and Maria in the game as being too “progressive” or “woke” since its unveiling.
At Twitter (previously known as X), Masashi Tsuboyama, director of Silent Hill 2 (2001), expressed his thoughts on the remake in a series of posts. He stated that the advantage of this remake is that a new generation can experience it. As a creator, he expressed his satisfaction with this development. It’s been 23 years since its release! Even if you haven’t played the original, you can still appreciate the remake on its own merits. Whether the remake is well-received or not doesn’t diminish the value of the original.
On October 8, the Silent Hill 2 remake is set to debut, and you can now check out the worldwide release times so you can schedule your trip to Silent Hill effectively.
