In 2002, Terminal Reality had made a significant impact with their game “Blair Witch, volume one: Rustin Parr,” which gained popularity. Yet, they didn’t stop there and continuously released new games. One such game was BloodRayne, initially not a blockbuster hit upon its launch but left an indelible impression on gamers, eventually spawning a series (although it was relatively short-lived).
Vampire versus Nazis
The game BloodRayne transports us back to the 1930s, a time just prior to World War II. Notably, the primary adversaries in this game were the Nazis. Commanded by Officer Jurgen Wolf, these forces sought artifacts with hidden powerful energies. He was convinced that these energies would enable the Third Reich to swiftly conquer their foes and grant him eternal life.
Unfortunately for him, he encountered Rayne, who was half-vampire and a member of the Brimstone Society in 1933. At this time, she was new to the organization dedicated to researching and combating threats to mankind. She had been sent on an assignment to Louisiana, with her initial objective being to investigate a plague turning people into living corpses. However, it soon became apparent that the Nazis, led by Wolf, were her primary focus instead.
Despite the German officer attempting to harm her severely, Rayne’s professional journey persisted unscathed. It wasn’t until five years later that her career truly took off, coinciding with her opportunity to bring violence upon the Nazi regime.
Bloody journey around the world
The journey that took Rayne (and thus us) started, taking us through Argentina followed by Germany. Regardless if we were in the marshes of Louisiana, a submerged German facility, or a magnificent German castle, there was always a common thread – battling the villains, no matter what objectives the developers assigned.
In battle, Rayne struck fear into German soldiers due to her relentless combat style, armed with a variety of weapons ranging from pistols and shotguns to machine guns, sniper rifles, and even rocket launchers. Her armory was further enhanced by explosive devices like grenades.
In direct confrontations, the half-vampire brandished swords and her own fangs, using them to puncture her adversaries’ necks and replenish her waning vitality. It was an added bonus that Rayne, like Lara Croft, could simultaneously handle two firearms. Her agility matched Lara’s, as she executed somersaults and concluded battles with impressive kicks.
In the action-packed world of BloodRayne, the fights were both awe-inspiring and gruesome (to be fair, this was fitting for the character). During these confrontations, it wasn’t just blood that was spilled, but also limbs of foes that seemed to fly around like projectiles. Consequently, it’s no wonder that such intense battles left an impact on Rayne, who, with each defeated adversary, grew more enraged. This anger filled a gauge known as BloodRage. Once full, activating this mode set the screen ablaze with a fiery red hue, granting Rayne extraordinary strength and speed.
Bloodsuckers abilities
In a different phrasing, Rayne wasn’t at the end of her tricks. She had a couple more, albeit less flashy but equally effective options to play. With her unique ability, she could see her targets clearly even in darkness using thermal vision. Moreover, she possessed the power to momentarily slow down time, giving her an advantage over her adversaries. This enabled her to shoot more precisely and rain a barrage of bullets on them, or evade incoming gunfire.
Over the course of our advancement, we fine-tuned Rayne’s abilities in close-quarter fighting, marksmanship, and BloodRage. Consequently, her prowess grew significantly, making her a more daunting adversary among the German forces.
Hit? Let’s say that…
The game titled BloodRayne initially came out for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in October 2002. However, the computer version of this Terminal Reality-developed game didn’t arrive until May 2003. Surprisingly, the game received lower scores from industry media than anticipated. On Metacritic, the console versions garnered average scores ranging from 73 to 76 out of 100. Unfortunately, the PC version didn’t perform as well, with an average rating of merely 65/100.
What happened next?
Despite not receiving critically acclaimed scores, the game managed to generate significant interest among players, ultimately resulting in the production of a sequel, BloodRayne 2. This spin-off was launched in October 2004 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox platforms, with a subsequent release on PCs in 2005. The title’s ratings were comparable to the original, averaging scores between 67-71 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Following the release of the sequel, Terminal Reality decided to abandon any further work on the franchise and shifted their attention towards other ventures instead. In 2011, it was WayForward who picked up the concept and created BloodRayne: Betrayal. However, unlike its predecessors, this version turned out to be a platform action game with side-scrolling events rather than a traditional third-person “action game.” Despite the shift in perspective and genre, the developers were unable to escape the pattern of lower ratings, as the average Metacritic score for
During this timeframe, the character BloodRayne was adapted into three movies as well, but I’d rather skip over those versions…
How to play BloodRayne today?
One of the select games in this series, BloodRayne, has been updated with a revamped version known as BloodRayne: Terminal Cut, initially released for PCs in November 2020. Later, it was titled BloodRayne: ReVamped and made available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch between 2021-2022. This updated release was met with much enthusiasm from gamers, leading to a follow-up game, as well as another version of BloodRayne: Betrayal.
In Steam, you can purchase the remastered BloodRayne for $14.99. On the other hand, it costs $19.99 on both the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, as well as the Nintendo eShop.
