As a gamer, I’ve always been fascinated by the intricate details that make vampires stand out. What sets them apart from just being attractive, mystical beings is their interaction with humans – or should I say, their victims. It’s not just their monstrous appearance that makes them terrifying; it’s the way they manipulate and feed off humanity that truly cements their status as memorable creatures of horror. Tonight, let’s delve into this aspect: the mortals.

You’re about to encounter a group of individuals who, unknowingly, are entangled in Seattle’s hidden realm of vampires. Many mistakenly attribute their hardships to mere bad luck, oblivious to the fact that vampires may be manipulating events behind the scenes. This is the essence of the Masquerade.

If Everyone is a Vampire

In order to create the stark contrasts characteristic of gothic horror literature, the vampire should be perceived through their allure, dependence, and dread. Every human serves as a lens, allowing readers and players to catch a glimpse of the vampire as they are seen by the living world.

Vampires are the canvas upon which the Kindred exercise their dark, painting skills with blood, as being a vampire brings immense, yet terrifying powers. These powers enable them to manipulate, consume, and derive pleasure from humans. The balance among these aspects offers insights into a vampire’s moral character. Ultimately, it is mortals who serve as the stage against which the eternal figures of the undead stand out in stark contrast with their bloody hues.

After all, if everyone is a vampire, then no one is.

Mortals in Seattle

Pandora Graves

It’s clear to me that you possess great strength, cunning, and potential for harm. Yet, hidden within you is an abyss of profound pain. I, too, understand this torment. It brings me immense joy to stand beside you.

A young woman, self-proclaimed as Pandora, saunters into a Seattle tavern, adorned in velvet and heavy makeup, boasting knowledge about the Kindred while appearing naive about the world at large. Who is she truly, who’s been supplying her with this information, and does she comprehend the peril she’s in? It seems doubtful – she exhibits a strong hint of protagonist syndrome.

Verona De Lancey

A very sound sleeper, indeed! At this point, it’s 8 o’clock at night, and I’ve been waiting outside for an hour. Unfortunately, I must disturb your peace because there’s a danger lurking, and it appears that no one is taking notice.

Instead of saying “Verona abandoned her prosperous parents in pursuit of some thrill in Seattle”, you could rephrase it as “Verona decided to depart from her affluent family seeking a touch of adventure in Seattle”. Given the ominous death threat found in her bag following a night out, it appears she has succeeded in her quest…

Dale Beecher

Hi there! Just a quick note, your list seems to be hiding among the pizza boxes. By the way, we’ve got a fresh batch of elixirs now, but my colleague made off with some. In his absence, he left me this lovely cloudberry-scented candle. Would you like to give it a whiff?

Dale is so relaxed that he seems almost flat on his back. He acknowledges the existence of Kindred society, much like how he’s aware of cleaning products or personal hygiene. However, it’s rare for him to consider any of them as close acquaintances.

Mr. Lemon

My friend, life is like a bowl of vibrant cherries: sweet, sticky, and full of color. And something else that’s tangy and green, like lemon moss…

Mr. Lemon’s true name remains unknown to all, even himself, which is fine since it seems he shares the same ignorance. He’s been in the SPD’s detention facility due to intoxication for a few days now, yet he shows no signs of sobriety. His speech is filled with references to citrus fruits, and he appears to believe that Seattle could be his mother.

Guru

I see traces of something ethereal following you, old friend, but don’t give those specters a second thought. Gently put them aside as you go along. Discover what drives you instead.

In Seattle, there are some individuals who assert they can perceive unusual phenomena. Guru, for instance, claims to see spirits, yet this doesn’t seem to faze him. Typically, you can find him hanging out with his fellow bikers, often near The Dutchman bar.

Carla

As you may understand, when duty calls for assistance, a multitude of faces appear before me. For a moment, they seem to merge, and the overwhelming nature of the situation… well, it became hard to remember distinctly.

Initially, Carla was a diligent paramedic, but an unfortunate event led to her leaving her job. Despite this separation from her employers, you can still find her on the streets, offering aid whenever possible. It appears she obtained medication through unconventional channels.

Reggie

Can you pick up the rhythm of the city? It’s ready and waiting for you. Blend in with its pulse… the path to enlightenment lies in unity.

Reggie is often found in Pioneer Square, and he’s deeply thoughtful about the city and its workings. He has his unique perspective on where he can contribute the most. He’s usually well-informed about the happenings in the surrounding areas.

Marigold

“For a few bucks I can show you the heavens – one way or another.”

In the vicinity of Atrium, Marigold is often recognized as a regular figure on the streets. For quite some time, she’s been offering her services to passersby, primarily dealing with astrological forecasting. As for the validity of her predictions, it remains uncertain. However, she maintains a strong faith in her beliefs.

Shelby

“The end is nigh, yet it is a gentle end that will carry us to rapture.”

Six months ago, Shelby used to work as a trader in a significant financial institution. However, recently, she claims to have received a profound revelation. Nowadays, you can find her strolling around the upscale neighborhoods of Seattle, spreading the word about an impending Rapture. She insists that there’s no need for fear regarding this event.

Officer Wheeler

It makes me curious what unusual situation you’re presenting to us today. Please go ahead and carry out your actions, and let’s try to avoid any unwanted incidents this time around.

Wheeler is a reliable, steadfast police officer based in Seattle. Occasionally, he encounters memory issues. He acknowledges that certain aspects of his job aren’t entirely clear. It might be wiser to concentrate on tasks he grasps well, such as desk duties, rather than delving too deeply into the uncertainties.

Mortal outcomes

Here are a few characters you’ll meet in the game. Your interactions with them are entirely at your discretion. You may choose to show them kindness, indifference, or even use them as sustenance. These meetings could significantly impact their lives forever. Some will be haunted by the experience, unable to rest peacefully. Others might spend sleepless nights searching for you. Many, possibly many more, may meet a premature end at your hands, falling victim to Hunger, anger, or a simple impulse.
