Valve Rakes in Over $100 Million from CS2 Cases Last Month!

The bustling market for Counter-Strike 2 skins operates efficiently, with an increase in players leading to a surge in market value, and Valve benefiting from every transaction.

In March 2025, a total of at least 32 million cases were opened by players in Counter-Strike 2.

For every case a player opens, they need to spend $2.49 to obtain the key, this fee goes straight to Valve. Moreover, many of these opened cases are bought from the Steam marketplace, and on top of the player’s purchase, Valve takes 15% as their share.

As a gamer, I’ve got a little something to share about the earnings. If we just focus on the keys, we’re looking at around 32 million cases translating to roughly $82 million. But here’s the kicker – when players buy these cases on Steam and resell them, trying to cash in on rising prices, that adds another chunk to the revenue pie. In fact, it’s safe to say we’re talking about well over $100 million just from those cases alone. Quite a tidy sum, wouldn’t you agree?

This graph does not encompass additional transactions from the marketplace involving goods such as knives and skins. Once more, Valve retains a 15% fee on these types of sales as well.

Or simply:

The graph excludes transactions for items other than knives and skins on the marketplace, with Valve still taking a 15% cut in those cases too.

CS2 players love opening cases

While official case statistics aren’t publicly available, it’s a reasonable approximation that this data may underestimate the actual figures. In other words, the given statistic might be lower than the real total.

The CS:GO Case Tracker website estimates the number of cases based on newly added skins to its database over a month, which are obtained from opened cases. However, since cases opened in private inventories might not be recorded, the actual number could be higher.

Over the course of CS:GO and CS2’s existence, a total of approximately 2.065 billion cases have been initiated. If you were to add up just the value of keys from these cases, it would surpass $5 billion. But remember, key prices have increased over time, so this figure might not be completely precise.

In general, March tends to be the busiest month for new cases being opened. For instance, in March 2024, a remarkable 38 million cases were opened, setting a new record.
