Valve Launches Steam Families, Collection Of Family-Orientated Features & Tools

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that Valve’s latest offering, Steam Families, is a game-changer for families who love to game together. Having been through numerous iterations of family sharing and management systems, I can confidently assert that this revamped feature is a breath of fresh air.

This week, Valve unveiled a fresh lineup of functionalities and resources for Steam’s user community, its digital games marketplace. The new offering, called Steam Families, is now accessible globally. Valve has provided comprehensive information about the safety features within Steam Families to ensure families and their dear ones have a secure gaming experience.

2024 saw Steam Families in its testing phase, granting chosen users an opportunity to trial the upgraded feature and its associated tools, thereby offering valuable insights to Valve prior to its official release. This revamped functionality supersedes both Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View by providing a comprehensive suite of tools and a centralized platform for enabling or disabling settings, managing members and games, among other features.

Steam Families offers users the chance to establish or become part of a family account that accommodates up to five individuals. This account can be managed via a PC, mobile device, or web browser of choice. Upon inviting others to join, they are given the option to be recognized as an adult or child within the family. Once invited, they will receive a notification to join Steam Family.

Steam Families is now out of beta and available for everyone! Learn more here:

Adult participants in the Steam Family setup are granted permissions to oversee invitations, remove members, and adjust various account settings such as Parental Controls, Child Payment Requests, and other restrictions. Any child accounts added to this feature will be required to adhere to all activated Parental Control settings, which can be customized through the “configure” option in Family Management to regulate their game access, playtime limits, and overall Steam Client privileges.

As a gaming enthusiast, one standout perk I’ve found with this recent update is the Family Sharing feature. With it, everyone in our family can dive into all the games we own that are compatible across devices! To access our collective collection, simply visit the Games Library tab and click on the drop-down icon. From there, tick the “Group by Library” checkbox to effortlessly browse through the shared games at your fingertips.

On September 11th, 2024, Valve posted an FAQ about Steam Families. This document explains that it is the developers, not Valve, who decide if their games can be shared through the Family Sharing feature. However, there may be technical or other reasons why some games have opted out of this feature. Valve has also introduced a tag on the Steam Store to help users identify which games are compatible with the Family Sharing tool. Games and related content that do not support this feature are specified by Valve.

  • Games and gaming content that require a subscription service or a third-party account or key
  • Free-to-play titles and their available DLCs
  • Region-locked games and DLCs
  • Unsupported games due to members’ current OS (operating system)
  • Unsupported games labeled by the developer as “unavailable for sharing”
  • All games are labeled as private by the owner
  • All games currently excluded from the Family Sharing feature remain excluded with the new Steam Families feature, especially games requiring a subscription service or a third-party account

Users have access to this common gaming library around the clock. If a game is being played by another user, they can either opt for another user’s version of the game which Steam will automatically launch or choose to wait until the game becomes free or purchased. Similarly, if a particular game isn’t playable, it typically means that game is currently in use and locked until other users stop playing it.

As a gamer, I can adjust my Parental Controls settings to hide certain games or content from our shared collection that other family members may not be allowed to access or play. If I need further clarification, I can check out the FAQ post or forum thread about Steam Families, and if I encounter any issues related to this feature, I can always submit a support ticket to Steam Support for assistance.
