65-year-old Val Kilmer, who passed away on Tuesday following his struggle with throat cancer, was among the most prominent actors during the ’80s and ’90s. His filmography encompassed a wide variety of genres, including action movies, biographical dramas, and comedies.
Following his debut role in the 1984 action comedy “Top Secret,” Kilmer gained prominence with his acting in the sci-fi comedy “Real Genius” (1985). He later shared the limelight with Tom Cruise in the 1986 hit “Top Gun.” After that, he featured in Ron Howard’s fantasy film “Willow” (1988). His portrayal of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s 1991 biopic “The Doors” earned him critical recognition.
During the ’90s, Val Kilmer saw a continuous succession of hits, earning him a place among the highest-earning actors of the era. He collaborated with Kurt Russell on the Western film “Tombstone” (1993), appeared in crime dramas such as Michael Mann’s renowned “Heat” (1995) and took on the role of Batman in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” the same year. In 1998, he lent his voice to the animated musical “The Prince of Egypt,” and joined forces with Oliver Stone once more for the 2004 release “Alexander.” However, after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, his career took a backseat, leaving him largely unable to speak. Nevertheless, he made a triumphant return to the big screen in 2022 for an emotional scene with Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick.
