USSR's Absurd Superweapon From Hearts of Iron 4: Gotterdammerung Confused Players, Even Though It Isn't Fiction

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the latest expansion for Hearts of Iron 4 – Götterdämmerung. Having dabbled in alternate history games and World War II strategy titles, I must admit that this expansion, while intriguing, left me scratching my head over some decisions made by Paradox Development Studio.

The newest addition to Hearts of Iron 4 has been generally well-received, but not every fan of the World War II strategy game was enthused about the alternate history aspects (despite these being a key feature of the expansion). This is clearly demonstrated by the players’ response to the seemingly out-of-place Russian vehicle in HoI 4: Götterdämmerung. However, it should be noted that this vehicle didn’t just appear out of thin air.

Project unrealistically special

To recall, among the novel aspects incorporated in the “German” extension is the experimental labs and the cutting-edge projects underway therein. These advanced technologies necessitate extensive investigation, and obtaining them also generally offers an additional advantage, often manifesting as a complimentary military unit or structure.

One reward is a Russian vessel that resembles an unconventional blend, appearing as if it’s a fusion of T-34 tanks equipped with attached howitzers, aircraft launching ramps, and a self-propelled SU-14 gun system. As for the weight, let’s just say this beast is hefty!

A real engineer’s nightmare

In truth, this seemingly outlandish project wasn’t born from the imagination of Paradox Development Studio; it was real and not the product of a madman’s mind as some might suppose. The creator, P. Osokin, held the rank of lieutenant colonel-engineer, although his expertise leaned more towards aviation than armor.

To put it simply, although Paradox deviated slightly from the initial blueprint, the overall layout remained unchanged. What differed were specific details such as replacing the two Katyusha launchers with aircraft catapults. This alteration didn’t diminish the project’s authenticity compared to Osokin’s original concept.

As a passionate follower, I wasn’t taken aback that an actual engineer was behind this project, given its approval as a solid concept – quite unlike the infamous KW-6, often ridiculed by model enthusiasts. Frankly, it’s hardly surprising considering the bewildering and amusing response this “controversial creation” stirred up among players (as seen on Reddit).

Some online users struggle (with limited success) to grasp the significance of this construction, while others liken it to the zords from Power Rangers or other mechanical counterparts. It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the only outlandish vehicle players can construct in the alternate history depicted in Hearts of Iron 4: Götterdämmerung.

On November 14th, the expansion for Hearts of Iron 4 titled “German” became available for purchase at $24.99. While some players initially expressed concerns about the cost versus content, it soon garnered acclaim from fans. As of now, more than 940 Steam user reviews have an overall approval rating of 81%, with 86% of these initial reviews being positive. Impressively, following its release, a record-breaking number of players, over 93 thousand, were concurrently playing Hearts of Iron 4.
