On Tuesday afternoon, April 22nd, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary disclosed information regarding their proposed plan in the afternoon hours.

At a recent press gathering, Makary revealed plans for the U.S. to set a nationwide benchmark and timetable for the food industry to phase out the use of artificial dyes. Additionally, he discussed initiating a procedure to withdraw authorization for synthetic food coloring within the upcoming weeks.

Additionally, Makary disclosed that the Food and Drug Administration intends to eliminate the remaining artificial dyes, such as Red 40, from their use by the end of the coming year.

US bans synthetic food dyes in sweeping change to snacks

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration permits a total of 36 food coloring additives, among them are eight synthetic, oil-derived dyes that may soon be phased out.

Following the FDA’s announcement to eliminate Red 3 from food and pharmaceuticals by 2028 due to research suggesting it led to cancer in test animals, the government has decided to prohibit further use of other artificial food colorants.

This spring, Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food, announced that the Food and Drug Administration will no longer allow the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in edible products and medications due to their authorization being revoked.

Research indicates that FD&C Red No. 3 can lead to cancer in lab rats when exposed to high concentrations. However, it’s crucial to note that the mechanism through which this dye triggers cancer in male rats is different from how it affects humans.

Thirty-five years ago, a particular dye was outlawed in cosmetics. After persistent pleas from health activists, it is now officially forbidden in both food products and medication.
