Gregg Phillips, who became FEMA director in December 2025, is under investigation due to old statements he made about unexpectedly appearing at a Waffle House 50 miles away from his original location.
Gregg Phillips, currently in charge of the federal government’s disaster response nationwide, shared these thoughts on the Onward podcast in January 2025, before he started his current job.
Although these comments were recently brought to light, people are noticing how strange they seem considering his current important and responsible role.

FEMA chief recalls “no fun” teleportation experience
On the podcast, Phillips recounted a story about going to Waffle House to get food while hanging out with friends.
Phillips says he unexpectedly woke up at a Waffle House in Rome, Georgia, which was about 50 miles from where he had been.
I was with my sons and told them I was going to Waffle House for breakfast. I actually ended up at a Waffle House about 50 miles from where we were.
He said his friends were confused when he called with his location, telling him it didn’t make sense because he’d only recently left their place.
“But it was possible. It was real,” Phillips added.
He went on to describe the experience as unsettling rather than exciting.
“Teleporting is no fun,” he said. “You know it’s happening, but you can’t do anything about it.”
Second story involves car being moved miles away
Phillips also recounted an incident where he said his car was inexplicably lifted into the air while he was driving. He claimed it traveled about 40 miles before landing in a ditch near a church.
He said both times something happened, it wasn’t due to power outages or health problems, and he couldn’t explain what caused them.
According to a FEMA representative, the remarks were made by Phillips in a casual, private conversation before they officially started their job. The discussion was described as relaxed and touched on philosophical topics.
