Upgrade Steam Deck Storage: Samsung’s Premium 1TB MicroSD Hits New Low Price

The one-terabyte Samsung Pro Plus microSD Card is currently available at an unprecedented low price during Amazon’s Big Spring Sale. Typically retailing for $120, this top-tier card is now selling for just $80. If you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, there’s a version of the same 1TB card featuring Sonic’s image, priced at $90 (originally $126). Known for its speed and reliability, the Pro Plus microSD Card is an excellent choice for expanding your Steam Deck or handheld PC’s storage capacity. However, as Samsung only entered the one-terabyte microSD market last summer, discounts on these cards have not been as frequent as those offered on SanDisk’s more popular options.

As an alternative, you can opt for the Samsung 1TB Evo Select microSD at just $70. This price equals its record low, while the previous lowest price for the Pro Plus was $90. Although the Evo Select is approximately 20MB/s slower than the Pro Plus, it’s still an excellent choice for Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, as well as handheld devices that run Windows or Android operating systems.

  • Samsung 1TB Pro Plus microSD Card (180MB/s) — $80 ($120)
  • Samsung 1TB Pro Plus microSD – Sonic the Hedgehog Edition (180MB/s) — $90 ($126)
  • Samsung 1TB Evo Select microSD Card (160MB/s) — $70 ($100)

These two 1TB Samsung cards boast U3 ratings, which signifies they are Ultra-High Speed Class 3 devices. This means they have the speed required for writing and reading 4K video content. Both of these cards would be ideal for your Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. The Pro Plus card offers a slight improvement in read speed, reaching up to 180MB/s compared to the Evo Select’s 160MB/s; however, this difference may not be noticeable when it comes to game performance on your Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck.

Currently at Amazon, Samsung microSD cards are $5 cheaper than their SanDisk equivalents for each model. The most popular SanDisk microSD card, the Ultra 1TB, is on sale for $75 and boasts read and transfer speeds of up to 150MB/s, which is 10MB/s slower than the Evo Select. In contrast, the SanDisk Extreme 1TB offers speeds that are 10MB/s faster than the Pro Plus, with up to 190MB/s read speeds.

For storage devices such as SanDisk and Samsung, their long-term reliability is a significant factor that makes them popular choices. Losing data can be frustrating for everyone, whether it’s family photos, work documents, or save files from hours of gaming progress. While the impact may not be as severe if you’re just storing video games on your microSD card, if the corrupted data includes valuable save files, it could be a big loss. It’s always wise to back up your saves for peace of mind.

Although we usually advise Samsung or SanDisk brands for microSD cards, affordable options also exist from budget manufacturers. During Amazon’s Spring Sale, the most appealing alternatives come from Lexar. The Lexar Play 1TB, priced at just $64, delivers read speeds of up to 160MB/s. According to Lexar, their upgraded version of the Lexar Play, designed with gaming in mind, boasts max read speeds of 205MB/s. The enhanced Lexar Play 1TB (205MB/s) model is available for $88 during this sale.
